Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hi Alina,

I hope you are doing well. I recently came to know through Sarah that you are going to Manchester university for your course continuation. I was very glad to hear this as I did the same last year. I can guarantee you its a very initial step towards a successful career.

I also joined the university of Sydney that is one of the top rated educational institutes since a decade. I went there to get my further academic and practical courses in medical field. And kid you not it was worth the experience.

Our country is also well known for its education but the environment provided in foreign institutes is appreciatable. I had a full year where I had residency just near my department and the facilities provided within the fee are extravagant. I had an unforgettable experience regarding staying there as it is a top class city of Australia. Moreover, I also had my senior colleagues there who assisted me to explore more of the city.

That particular year studying there was so mesmerising that still the tricks and tips learnt during those sessions are helpful now days. The strategy learnt from multi talented professor and mentors are not available here in our local institutes. I hope this goes the same for you too.

You can ask me freely if you have anything to ask for help.

Yours affectionately,

Muzdalfa Zain

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated where you studied (University of Sydney), described the environment and facilities, and explained the academic benefits. However, the response contains a significant factual inconsistency: you begin by mentioning the friend is going to Manchester University, but then you describe your own experience at the University of Sydney. While you successfully cover the requirements, the connection between the two locations is slightly confusing. The tone is appropriate for a friendly letter, and the ideas are relevant to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'That particular year' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined to separate the description of the country from the academic benefits more distinctly. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the mention of Manchester and your own experience in Sydney could be smoother to avoid confusion for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use some good collocations like 'top rated educational institutes' and 'practical courses'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'appreciatable' (which is not standard English; 'appreciable' or 'impressive' would be better) and 'course continuation' (which sounds slightly unnatural). You also use 'kid you not', which is informal but perhaps a bit too colloquial for this context. Expanding your range of academic and descriptive vocabulary would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'since a decade' (should be 'for a decade'), 'the strategy learnt from multi talented professor' (should be 'professors'), and 'helpful now days' (should be 'nowadays'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will improve your accuracy.
