Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear riya,

I hope this letter finds you in great health. Meera your elder sister told me that you're planning to study abroad for a year as a part of your university course. First of all a very congratulations I am extremely happy for you.

As I have gone through the similar process during my course,I can really help you out in few essential things to keep in mind during selecting the course. I came to canada in 2024 to pursue my masters in sports medicine in toronto the same city you're planning to come for your course.

I came here with no prior connections so it was a bit difficult for me to manage things. I use to get confused about ths metro routes and supermarkets. However, to my surprise the people around here are very helpful and kind. I got a chance to meet people from different ethinicity and got to learn about their culture.

I strongly believe pursuing your further studies in forgein country will not only benefit you academically but it will also help you become more independent. It will also give you a chance to make new friends and build your network with people of same community. It will grow you personally and professionally.

Its amazing that you're moving to canada, do let me know if you need any help for shiffting or to find a place for yourself, I have some juniors still living in toronto.

yours lovingly

Diksha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt in a natural and friendly tone appropriate for a General Training letter. You tell the reader where you studied by stating, 'I came to canada in 2024 to pursue my masters in sports medicine in toronto.' You describe what you learnt about the country by mentioning that the people are very kind and that you met individuals from different ethnicities. Finally, you explain how the year abroad helped your studies by noting that it benefits you academically and helps you become more independent, alongside growing personally and professionally. The tone is consistently warm and conversational, and the ideas are fully developed for a friendly letter. The task is achieved well, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization with distinct paragraphs separating the greeting, introduction of the topic, personal experiences in Canada, academic and personal benefits, and the closing offer of help. Cohesive devices such as 'As I have gone through', 'However', and 'to my surprise' are used effectively to guide the reader through your thoughts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different themes, such as transitioning from your arrival challenges to the broader benefits of studying abroad. While referencing and paragraph transitions are generally smooth, some minor mechanical transitions slightly limit the flow, placing this securely in the Band 7 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for a general correspondence task, using phrases like 'pursue my masters', 'prior connections', and 'academically and professionally'. There are a few spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'ethinicity' instead of 'ethnicity', 'forgein' instead of 'foreign', and 'shiffting' instead of 'shifting'. Additionally, phrases like 'in great health' are somewhat unnatural for a casual letter to a friend's sister. However, these lexical errors do not impede communication, and you successfully attempt less common vocabulary items throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures effectively, such as in 'As I have gone through the similar process during my course, I can really help you out'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including lowercase letters at the start of sentences ('riya', 'canada', 'toronto'), missing commas, and a run-on structure in 'Meera your elder sister told me that you're planning'. Despite these errors, the majority of your sentences are clear, and meaning is never obscured or impeded, showing a dependable level of grammatical control.
