Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Maria,

I hope this letter finds you well, how's it going? Anyway I'm writing to share my incredible experience living abroad, since you've asked for it.

I successfully completed my masters in Cybersecurity Toronto, Canada, in one of the respected universities which is North York university. It was honestly a worthwhile experience studying there since they provide reliable and convenient facilities like easy availability of study resources and a laptop for every student to study efficiently.

I discovered that Canada has some amazing schemes for international students such as discounts for renting accommodation and also when buying groceries.

I must say that studying in abroad will undoubtedly provide lucrative opportunities. I was enabled to land my dream job with a huge number of incentive profits each year. Not only that, but also coming abroad helped me to build essential skills such as problem solving and easy adaptability.

I hope my experiences really encourage you to take further steps and prepare yourself with a lot of enthusiasm. For any inconvenience please don't hesitate to contact me.

All the best for the future.

yours friend,

Sara Jafar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You mentioned where you studied by stating North York University in Toronto, Canada. You described aspects of the country, such as discovering amazing schemes for international students like discounts for renting accommodation and buying groceries. You also clearly explained why your year abroad was helpful for your studies by highlighting how it helped you land your dream job and build essential skills like problem-solving and adaptability. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly, fitting the general letter format. All parts of the task are fully addressed with relevant ideas, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organised logically with a clear beginning, middle paragraphs addressing the bullet points, and an appropriate closing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different ideas, such as your university experience, the country's perks, and the career benefits. Cohesive devices like 'Anyway', 'I must say that', and 'Not only that, but also' are used to connect sentences and ideas, although referencing and transitions could be slightly smoother in places. Overall, the arrangement is coherent and easy to follow throughout, meeting the criteria for a band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some attempts at less common and flexible items, such as 'lucrative opportunities', 'incentive profits', and 'easy adaptability'. There are a few minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'studying in abroad' (which should be 'studying abroad') and 'incentive profits', but these do not impede communication. Your vocabulary choice is generally appropriate for an informal letter while still showcasing your ability to use varied terminology related to education and employment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and correlative conjunctions like 'Not only that, but also coming abroad helped me to...'. There are several error-free sentences, and your control over grammar is generally sound. However, a few minor slips occur, such as the missing preposition or article in 'masters in Cybersecurity Toronto' and the phrase 'For any inconvenience please don't hesitate to contact me' (which sounds slightly too formal and mismatched for congratulating a friend's sister about study abroad experiences). Despite these minor issues, communication is never impeded.
