Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student clearly states where they studied ("I went Canada... University Canada west... Vancouver"), describes what they learned about the country (mentioning cultural exploration and languages), and explains why the year was helpful for their studies (assisting with accounting exams). However, the tone and opening salutation ("Dear sister,") show some confusion regarding the persona, as the prompt specifies writing to a friend's sister rather than one's own sister. Additionally, the development of ideas remains somewhat basic and lacks depth. While all parts are addressed, the overall execution sits at a Band 5.5 to Band 6 level. Because the response is fully developed in terms of covering the required points and exceeds the minimum word count, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter displays a logical overall arrangement, moving from an introduction and study location to cultural experiences, academic benefits, and a concluding recommendation. Cohesive devices such as "Along with this," "Moreover," and "that is why" are employed to connect ideas, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is attempted, but the formatting is somewhat disjointed with irregular spacing and indentation. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional lapses in cohesion occur, such as the abrupt shift into the concluding remarks. Overall, the structure provides a clear enough progression to satisfy the requirements for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, incorporating terms like "international students," "renowned," and "virtual and online classes." However, there are notable word-choice errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as "get enhance knowledge" (instead of "enhance knowledge"), "acountant" (spelling error), and "success to admision" (grammatical and lexical misuse). Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed accuracy. While these lexical slips and spelling mistakes are noticeable, they do not impede the overall communication of the letter, firmly placing the response in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conjunctions such as "which is very useful" and "as i want to become acountant." However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, articles, and prepositions, including "i went Canada" (missing preposition), "This institution name is" (instead of "The name of this institution is"), and lowercase personal pronouns ("i"). Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic. Although these errors are frequent, the meaning remains comprehensible, and the structures demonstrate enough variety to merit a Band 5.0.
