Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ana,

I hope you're doing well.

I am writing for suggesting you about studying overseas for a year in complaince for your university learning.

As I have also completed my studies this year, so I want to share my journey with you. I studied at Algoma University which is located in Missisuaga, Ontario. I studied one year of diploma in that school. During my studies, I have not only learnt about the course but also I get to know about learning different cultures. I love to explore cultures and traditions and moreover one of the exciting thing is that people of this country are so helpful and supportive.

A year in which I was taking classes was such an amazing year for me due to the fact that my University faculty members were so supportive. They assisted me wherever I need any help. I did not face any hurdle during my study year. If you want to do part time job I can also help you in getting jon so you can easily manage your fees without burdening your parents.

Let me know what you think

Well that is all for know.

Best wishes

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You successfully covered all parts of the bullet points required by the task instructions. You addressed where you studied by mentioning Algoma University in Mississauga, Ontario. You also described what you learned about the country, highlighting the supportive nature of the people and your interest in different cultures. Furthermore, you explained how the year abroad helped your studies by mentioning the supportive faculty members and the ability to work part-time to manage university fees. Although the tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister, there are some awkward expressions in the opening, such as 'I am writing for suggesting you about studying overseas'. However, the core requirements of the prompt are fully met with clear, relevant ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

Your letter is coherent overall and follows a logical structure starting with a friendly greeting, moving through your experiences, and ending with a warm sign-off. You used some cohesive devices and referencing pronouns to connect your ideas, such as 'during my studies' and 'due to the fact that'. However, paragraphing could be managed more effectively, as your main body is bundled into a single block of text rather than being broken down logically into distinct paragraphs for each bullet point. Additionally, mechanical phrasing like 'Well that is all for know' slightly disrupts the flow of the letter. Overall progression is clear, but cohesive control remains somewhat basic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general letter, attempting some less common phrases like 'university faculty members' and 'supportive and helpful'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors that hinder precision, such as 'writing for suggesting you' instead of 'writing to suggest', 'in complaince for' instead of 'as part of', and 'getting jon' instead of 'getting a job'. There is also a spelling slip ('Missisuaga' instead of Mississauga). These lexical inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher band score due to recurring awkward collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You utilised a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses like 'due to the fact that my University faculty members were so supportive' and conditional structures like 'If you want to do part time job I can also help you'. However, your writing contains several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'As I have also completed my studies this year, so I want to share' (redundant use of 'so') and 'wherever I need any help' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is occasionally neglected, such as missing commas in complex sentences. These errors rarely impede comprehension, but they show a lack of consistent grammatical control across complex structures.
