Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Deepak's sister

First of all i would like to appriciate that you have asked about my experience before going to abroad. I was in International Business University in Toronto Canada for a year. I have completed my studies from there and it was a great experience for me.

I have learnt a lot of things about Canada especially their first language, French, which helped in contacting with their native people. Apart from the language i also learened about their culture, how they live and what is there eating behaviour which directly helped me in my foreign knowledge.

That one year of my life was not forgettable just because of those experience i have gained my interest in business and i am planing to strat a business there. All these things helped me in my studies becuase I have already took a stream which was in business so all my personal experience relates to my studies. i would like to say that you should go there for better and new experience for your life.

kind regards,

Ajay Kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the writer clearly states where they studied by mentioning 'International Business University in Toronto Canada'. Second, they describe what they learned about the country, specifically noting 'their first language, French' and aspects of Canadian culture, eating behaviour, and daily life. Finally, the writer explains how the year abroad helped their studies, connecting their personal experiences and acquired interest in business directly to their academic stream. The tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for an informal letter to a friend's sister, although the opening salutation is slightly awkward ('Dear Deepak's sister'). Overall, the task is addressed well and ideas are sufficiently developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs that separate different themes, starting with an introduction and the university location, moving on to cultural and language learnings, and concluding with the academic benefits and a sign-off. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Apart from the language', 'That one year', and 'All these things'. However, paragraphing could be structured more cleanly, and some logical transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor cohesion issues appear between sentences, such as in the final paragraph where multiple ideas are grouped together closely without sufficient breathing room.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including phrases like 'International Business University', 'native people', and 'eating behaviour'. There are some noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'appriciate' instead of appreciate, 'learened' instead of learned, 'strat' instead of start, and 'becuase' instead of because. Additionally, phrasing like 'foreign knowledge' is slightly unnatural. While less common vocabulary is attempted, these inaccuracies in word choice and spelling prevent the response from achieving a higher band, though they do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative and subordinate clauses such as 'which helped in contacting with their native people' and 'that you have asked about my experience before going to abroad'. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses throughout the text, including lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences ('i would like'), missing articles ('going to abroad' instead of going abroad), and slight prepositional awkwardness ('contacting with' instead of communicating with). Sentence control falters occasionally, but the errors rarely impede the reader's ability to understand the message.
