Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Laura,
I hope you are doing well. I heard you are planning to study aboard for your one year masters' program. So I am writing to share my experience.
I completed my second degree at the University of Victoria, which is located in the capital city of British Columbia, Canada. It is one of largest universities in the province BC and situated near coastal. Thus, it gives similar sunny vide like Sri Lanka.
As you may have heard Canada is a multi cultural country. So I managed to learn different cultural practices and cuisine. Also, I met people from different regions.
The Univesrity provides advanced facilities for its students. Hence it was really easy for me to complete my program without any issues. Moreover, the campus offers intership and industrial training sessions. It really helped for me to understand technical concepts. Altogether, it was a wonderful experience.
If you need more details please feel free to reach out to me.
All the best.
Yumi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You successfully covered all parts of the letter prompt. You addressed where you studied by mentioning the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. You also described what you learned about the country, noting that it is a multicultural society where you experienced different cultural practices and cuisine. Additionally, you explained how the year abroad was helpful for your studies by mentioning advanced facilities, internships, and industrial training that helped you understand technical concepts. The tone is suitably friendly and appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister. All bullet points from the instructions are clearly and fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Your letter is logically organised with a clear opening, body paragraphs addressing specific prompts, and a friendly closing. You used appropriate paragraphing to separate different ideas, such as your location, cultural experiences, and academic benefits. Cohesive devices like 'Hence', 'Moreover', and 'Also' are used to connect your ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, allowing the reader to follow your personal narrative smoothly from beginning to end without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'multicultural', 'industrial training', and 'advanced facilities'. However, there are some noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as writing 'study aboard' instead of 'abroad', 'Univesrity' instead of 'University', 'intership' instead of 'internship', and 'sunny vide' instead of 'vibe'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly to the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'It is one of largest universities in the province BC and situated near coastal.' and 'Moreover, the campus offers intership and industrial training sessions.' There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing articles ('near coastal', 'one of largest'), spelling errors, and 'It really helped for me to understand' (which should be 'It really helped me to understand'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of your sentences are comprehensible.
