Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mansi,

I am very glad to hear that you are moving to abroad for a year and asking me to share my experience with you. I studied in the University of Niagara Falls, Toronto and I learnt a lot throughout the year.

I was very nervous on my first day of university because I didn't know anyone personally. When i went to the classroom i came to know about my classmates and I made many friends on my first day at university. Professors are helping and friendly here as well as I learnt how to process Microsoft Word and Excel smartly as professors taught it in very simpler method. Along with that I polished my skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving especially my confidence to speak in front of whole classmates.

As I get to know about the software usage like MS word ans Excel, it now helps me a lot with my studies as it makes my work easier regading assignments, projects, and presentations.

I hope you will learn even more after moving abroad. Good Luck to you!

Best regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. Specifically, the student states the study location by writing, 'I studied in the University of Niagara Falls, Toronto,' describes what was learnt about the country through cultural and academic adjustments, and explains how the year abroad was helpful for studies by mentioning that software usage like 'MS word and Excel' makes 'work easier regarding assignments, projects, and presentations.' The tone is appropriately informal and friendly for a letter to a friend's sister. All parts of the task are addressed adequately with relevant ideas, placing this response firmly in Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical letter format, starting with an appropriate greeting ('Dear Mansi,') and closing with a sign-off. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Along with that' and 'As I get to know,' though some linking is slightly mechanical or repetitive ('and', 'because'). Paragraphing is generally utilized to separate distinct ideas, such as the introduction of the university experience versus the specific academic benefits. However, referencing and transitions between sentences could be smoother to reach a higher band. Overall, the organization is clear and easy to follow, supporting a score of 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms relevant to university life and studies, such as 'assignments,' 'projects,' 'presentations,' 'time management,' and 'communication.' There are some minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'moving to abroad' (instead of 'moving abroad') and 'regading' (instead of 'regarding'), along with a capitalization slip ('ans'). Despite these errors, communication is never impeded. The writer attempts some less common phrasing like 'polished my skills,' which demonstrates a reasonable lexical range suitable for a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I was very nervous on my first day of university because I didn't know anyone personally.' There are some noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'When i went to the classroom i came to know' (lack of capitalization, run-on feel), 'Professors are helping and friendly here' (incorrect adjective form, should be 'helpful'), and tense inconsistency ('As I get to know' instead of 'As I got to know'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the sentence forms show sufficient control for a Band 6.0.
