Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all the required bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly stated where you studied (Vancouver Community College in British Columbia for culinary arts), described what you learned about the country and culture (learning about global cuisines, butchery, pastry, and experiencing a supportive government and independent lifestyle), and explained why it was helpful for your studies (gaining certifications like the Red Seal and securing an internship that led to a job offer). The tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for a letter to a friend's sister. Ideas are well-extended and supported with personal anecdotes, showing a clear purpose throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The letter maintains a clear overall progression from the initial greeting through your experiences to your final advice and closing. However, the organization is hindered by a lack of proper paragraphing, as the main body is written as one very long block of text. Cohesive devices such as 'when', 'and', 'but', and 'so' are used, but sentences are frequently strung together with coordinating conjunctions rather than being broken down logically. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of paragraph breaks makes the flow mechanical and requires the reader to work harder to follow the progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss your studies and experiences, incorporating relevant topic-specific terms such as 'culinary arts', 'knife skills', 'global cuisine', 'butchery', and 'internship'. However, there are numerous spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'heared', 'oversea', 'expwerience', 'vancouver', 'coolege', 'intrusting', 'progmram', 'interust', 'diffrent', 'cousine', 'pastery', 'personm', 'prep', 'oppertunity', and 'businesss'. While these errors do not completely impede communication because the context is clear, their frequency prevents you from achieving a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'when i was came to canada i did study...', 'after completing my study i was placed...'). However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, including tense inconsistencies, incorrect verb forms ('i was came', 'i nothing know', 'i never known', 'i not only doing'), missing capitalisation, and run-on sentences joined by commas instead of proper punctuation. These errors are noticeable and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, though the core meaning usually remains understandable.
