Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sarah,

It was great to hear that you are thinking about spending a year studying abroad. I did the same last year, so I’m happy to share my experience with you.

I studied at the University of Windsor in Canada as part of my university program. At first, I was a little nervous because everything was new, but I quickly became comfortable with the campus and made friends from different countries.

During my stay, I learned a lot about Canadian culture and lifestyle. People were generally polite, punctual and respectful of personal space. I also noticed that Canada is very multicultural, and this gave me the chance to meet people from many different backgrounds. I even got used to the cold winters!

The year abroad was extremely useful for my studies because I experienced a different teaching style and improved my communication and teamwork skills. I also became more independent and confident, which helped me perform better academically.

I would definitely recommend studying abroad if you get the opportunity.

Best wishes,

Nevil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task in a clear and natural manner. First, the writer tells the friend's sister where they studied by stating, 'I studied at the University of Windsor in Canada.' Second, cultural insights are clearly described, noting that 'People were generally polite, punctual and respectful of personal space' and mentioning the multicultural environment. Third, the academic benefits are well explained through the statement, 'The year abroad was extremely useful for my studies because I experienced a different teaching style and improved my communication and teamwork skills.' The tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for a General Training letter, and the ideas are fully developed and relevant throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and smooth progression throughout. The response is properly structured with an appropriate greeting, a well-defined introduction, distinct body paragraphs handling individual bullet points, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are used naturally and unobtrusively, such as transitional phrases like 'At first', 'During my stay', and 'I also'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a single, distinct aspect of the experience. Referencing and pronoun use are clear, ensuring the reader easily follows the narrative without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and flexible range of vocabulary suited to a General Training letter. Appropriate lexical items and collocations are used effectively, such as 'respectful of personal space', 'multicultural', 'independent and confident', and 'teaching style'. While the vocabulary is mostly common and functional rather than highly sophisticated, it is deployed with good control and precision. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, allowing for a smooth and natural reading experience that aligns well with the descriptors for Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The student displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures with frequent error-free sentences. Examples of successful complex structures include 'At first, I was a little nervous because everything was new...' and 'The year abroad was extremely useful for my studies because I experienced a different teaching style...'. Control over grammar and punctuation is strong throughout, with correct past tense narrative forms and accurate subject-verb agreement. Errors are virtually absent, showing a high level of accuracy that pushes the response comfortably into the higher band range.
