Dear........,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Megha,

I am writing to advice you about your one year internship at Algonquin college in Canada and share my experience about it. I was really happy you choose my college as part pf your course curriculum.

To begin with, I recently completed my graduation in the field of Information Technology course. The faculty here are friendly and always supports you. The College infrastructure is so good with a friendly environment.

In addition to that, it is ranked as 5th among the Canadian universities according to the recent survey conducted by the public trust group. I learn how to live in a multi-cultural society and adapt to new culture. It has a lot of tourist places and the people in here are friendly.

I would like to tell you that the degree i got from this college helps me more to learn more in a practical way. For an instance, working with robotics in the labs made me feel more confident. As a result i got placed in amazon as a Senior AI developer.

I can't wait to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

Bala

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully stated where you studied (Algonquin college in Canada), described what you learnt about the country (living in a multi-cultural society, tourist places, and friendly people), and explained why it was helpful for your studies (practical learning, working with robotics, and career progression). However, there is a significant misunderstanding of the persona and prompt context. The prompt asks you to write to your friend's sister about your own past year abroad as a student. Instead, you addressed her as if she is doing an internship and referred to the institution as 'my college,' mixing up roles and mentioning an 'internship' and graduation when the scenario was simply studying abroad. Because all required information is present despite these confusions, this earns a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter has a clear opening and closing, and paragraphs are used to separate different ideas, such as introduction, institutional details, and academic benefits. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with,' 'In addition to that,' and 'As a result,' which help guide the reader through the text. However, referencing is sometimes unclear, such as shifting between your experience and the reader's situation ('I am writing to advice you about your one year internship... and share my experience about it'). Paragraphing is somewhat inconsistent with very short single-sentence paragraphs at the end. Overall, the organization is coherent enough for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common and topic-specific terms such as 'curriculum,' 'infrastructure,' 'multi-cultural society,' and 'Senior AI developer.' However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as using 'advice' instead of 'advise,' writing 'pf' instead of 'of,' and stating 'the degree i got... helps me more to learn' rather than helping me learn effectively. Spelling errors like 'choose' instead of 'chose' (in past tense context) also appear. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses ('according to the recent survey conducted by...') and conditional/result clauses ('As a result i got placed in amazon...'). There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including lowercase 'i', missing apostrophes ('degree i got'), subject-verb agreement issues ('The faculty here... always supports you' vs plural faculty), and tense inconsistencies ('you choose' instead of 'chose', 'I learn' instead of 'learned'). While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede communication, reflecting the descriptors for Band 5.5 to 6.0. Given the mix of functional complex structures, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
