Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sara,
I hope this letter finds you well. It is a great news that you want to take a Global Health course in a Pakistani University. The best option for getting an admission in this subject is the Punjab University where they conduct a full year intensive program and hands-on taining . I am sure here you will learn about the prevalance and burden of diseases still existing in thedeveloping countries .
Pakistana is a beautiful historical country rich in culture and heritage. There are rivers , mountains and many famous places to explore. Locals here are very friendly and helpful. Your teachers and research supervisors from the university will be supportive too.
I have spend a year here doing research in the Lahore city which was the best place to conduct research about the incidence of the disease T. B . Although this has been eradicated from all over the world but still exists in Pakistan . Staying here for my research project gave me the opportunity to collect samples , conduct live interviews of the locals . It overall helpd me in making my work more authentic and credible.
I would wait to hear back from you soon .
Regards,
Shanzay

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully covered all parts of the prompt in your letter to Sara. You stated where you studied, specifically mentioning Punjab University in Lahore, Pakistan. You also described the country by noting that it is "a beautiful historical country rich in culture and heritage" with friendly locals and varied landscapes. Furthermore, you explained how the year abroad helped your studies by highlighting your research on T.B., noting that staying there gave you the opportunity to "collect samples, conduct live interviews of the locals" which made your work more "authentic and credible." The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for a friend's sister. Your ideas are relevant and sufficiently extended, easily meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter is clearly structured with an appropriate greeting, well-defined paragraphs for different themes, and an appropriate closing. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving from the university course and city to the general impressions of the country, and finally to your specific research experience. You use basic cohesive devices adequately to connect your thoughts. However, paragraphing and referencing can occasionally feel a bit disjointed due to minor mechanical transitions and spacing errors between sentences. Overall, there is a clear logical progression throughout the letter that supports easy reading, fitting comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range. We will award a solid 6.5 for these minor mechanical cohesion issues.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some attempts at less common and topic-specific items such as "intensive program," "hands-on training," "prevalence," and "eradicated." However, there are some noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as "trianing" instead of training, "Pakistana," "helpd," and writing "T. B." with spaces. Additionally, phrasing like "getting an admission in this subject" is slightly unnatural. These lexical errors do not impede communication, as your meaning remains clear, but they prevent you from achieving a higher band score. You operate at a solid Band 6.0 level for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You successfully attempted a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using relative clauses and conditional-style constructions such as "Although this has been eradicated from all over the world but still exists in Pakistan." However, you made a few grammatical and punctuation errors, including a double subject error ("It is a great news that..."), an incorrect verb tense ("I have spend a year here..."), and redundant phrasing such as pairing 'although' directly with 'but'. Punctuation spacing issues also appear before commas and periods. These errors rarely impede communication, but they demonstrate that you do not yet have consistent control over complex grammar. This places your grammatical performance at a Band 6.0.
