Dear........,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Lily,

Hope you are doing well. I recieved your letter yesterday and I am glad to know that you are deciding to go abroad for studies. As per my recommendation you should consider going to Canada, thats where I went for my post graduate diploma.

Canada is a multi culture and friendly country. However, I learnt a number of things there. Firstly, it made me polite, everyone there will greet you and will speak very softly displaying respect. Secondly, health care facilities are free for everyone even if you are a student which was something new. And lastly, there are a number of beautiful places to visit for example Banff, you must have seen it often in movies.

I had never been away from home ever before and I was really anxious how will I survive there. But you would be surprised to know that I got a part time job in a restaurant, and so I would go to go college during the day and would work in the evening. As my course was related to hospitality my job really helped me to practise my skills practically. My whole journey changed me as person,it made me confident and helped me to explore my hidden personality.

I hope you find my advice useful.

Yours Loving,

Angad Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. You clearly stated where you studied by mentioning that you went to Canada for your postgraduate diploma. You also described what you learnt about the country, highlighting features such as free healthcare and the polite culture. Furthermore, you explained how the year abroad was helpful for your studies by connecting your part-time job in a restaurant directly to your hospitality course, which allowed you to practise your skills practically. The tone of the letter is appropriate and friendly, matching the context of writing to a friend's sister. All bullet points are fully addressed with relevant details and clear development, meeting the requirements for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter is clearly structured with an appropriate greeting and sign-off, and you have organised your ideas into logical paragraphs. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction and location, cultural and societal observations, and the academic and personal impact of the year abroad. You used cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'And lastly' to structure your points effectively, although some transitions could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, for instance when you use 'that's where I went' to refer back to Canada. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to guide the reader through your narrative.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary for this task, successfully using terms like 'postgraduate diploma', 'health care facilities', and 'hospitality'. However, there are some minor lexical errors and spelling mistakes, such as writing 'recieved' instead of 'received' and 'multi culture' instead of 'multicultural'. While you attempted some less common vocabulary, word choices like 'explore my hidden personality' sound slightly unnatural in this context. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You showed a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas, such as 'even if you are a student which was something new'. There are a few grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including comma splices ('As my course was related to hospitality my job really helped me...'), missing apostrophes in contractions ('thats'), and minor phrasing issues. However, the majority of your sentences are clear, and the errors do not impede communication or cause difficulty for the reader.
