Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Meghana,

How have you been? I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to provide some good advice on studying abroad, as you asked me during our telephonic conversation. It has been 6 months since I completed my postgraduate degree. Basically, I pursued a double master's degree in RGA ( Regulatory Affairs) at Northeastern University (NEU), Toronto campus.

Canada is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen. Not only is the education system straightforward, but faster development can be seen in its evaluation system. Furthermore, it offers more practical exposure rather than just theoretical knowledge. I got to handle many medical devices in the real world, and the experience was fantastic. These hands-on practices enhanced my critical thinking and interpersonal skills.

I would suggest that you definitely go overseas to complete your postgraduate course provided by Centennial University, Brampton campus.

Wishing you the best for your future endeavours. Do take care, and let me know if any help is needed in finding suitable accommodation.

Best regards,

Devanshi vasani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions well. First, the letter successfully states where the author studied by mentioning Northeastern University, Toronto campus. Second, it describes what was learnt about the country, noting Canada's beautiful scenery, straightforward education system, and focus on practical exposure. Third, it explains how the year abroad helped their studies by enhancing critical thinking and interpersonal skills through handling medical devices. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal/friendly letter to a friend's sister, though the mention of Centennial University at the end introduces a slight ambiguity regarding where the author actually studied. Overall, the ideas are relevant and well-developed, aligning closely with the Band 7 requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the opening pleasantries and background introduction to the description of Canada and the concluding advice. Cohesive devices such as 'Not only', 'Furthermore', and 'provided by' are used with reasonable flexibility, although the paragraphing could be slightly more balanced. Referencing is generally clear, connecting ideas well from sentence to sentence. The overarching structure fits comfortably within the Band 7 criteria, ensuring the reader can follow the narrative effortlessly without any confusion regarding the progression of thoughts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, such as 'postgraduate degree', 'practical exposure', 'theoretical knowledge', and 'interpersonal skills'. There is an awareness of collocation and style appropriate for a letter about higher education. However, there are minor awkward expressions, such as 'telephonic conversation' (which sounds overly formal and unnatural) and 'faster development can be seen in its evaluation system'. Despite these occasional lapses, the vocabulary used is adequate to convey precise meaning without impeding communication, supporting a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The student displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating forms such as 'Not only is the education system straightforward, but faster development can be seen...' and conditional/subordinate clauses like 'provided by Centennial University'. There is a good level of control over punctuation and grammar throughout the majority of the response. While there are a few minor awkward constructions, error-free sentences are frequent, and grammatical slips do not impede communication in any way. This demonstrates competent control over the grammatical features expected at Band 7.
