Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ashley,

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I received a letter from your elder sister stating that you are intrested in persuing your next year of study in abroad. She was asking about my experience as a foriegn student. I did my final year of medical study at University of California and it was the best decision I have ever made in my life.

The fascilities available to us in our country to learn and for hands on practice are far more different than abroad. To study in a developed nation increases your learning oppurtunities. Modern ways of gaining knowledge and highly trained proffesors can train you in best possible way. My last year has helped me progress in my career alot more than my all years of education

More over US is the country of cultural diversity and freedom. Its adavanced technologies has made it exceptional country to live. Over all I had a memorable time of life abroad. You should also avail the chance.

Let me know whatever you decide.

yours faithfuly,

Leena.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly stated where you studied by mentioning the 'University of California,' described what you learned regarding the country's cultural diversity, advanced technology, and facilities, and explained why your year abroad was helpful for your career progression and learning opportunities. The tone is appropriate for a friendly letter to a friend's sister, and the purpose of the letter is consistently maintained throughout. Although some ideas, such as the comparison of facilities, could have been elaborated with a bit more specific detail, all parts of the prompt are adequately addressed, meeting the criteria for a solid performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening greeting to the final sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different themes, such as the introduction and university details, the benefits of the country, and the final encouragement. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical, such as 'More over' and 'Over all.' Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional minor cohesion lapses occur between sentences. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, supporting the flow of ideas effectively.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items like 'cultural diversity,' 'hands on practice,' and 'career progression.' However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'intrested' instead of interested, 'persuing' instead of pursuing, 'foriegn' instead of foreign, 'fascilities' instead of facilities, and 'oppurtunities' instead of opportunities. While these errors do not impede communication and the meaning remains clear, the frequency of spelling mistakes prevents the score from reaching a higher band. Using more precise collocations would also enhance the natural flow of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('The fascilities available to us... are far more different than abroad'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, including 'study in abroad' instead of studying abroad, 'far more different than' instead of very different from, and 'all years of education' instead of all my other years of education. Punctuation and sign-off conventions also contain minor inaccuracies, such as 'yours faithfuly' instead of Yours faithfully,. However, the grammatical errors rarely impede communication, and many sentences remain accurate.
