Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Radhika,
I hope you are doing well. I am so happy that you are planning to come in Canada for your better future. I am very excited to share my whole experience with you.
I came in Regina, Canada two years ago. I have completed my study at the Univiersity of Regina. I had a degree of Kinesiology and Health Studies but after a year, I converted it into 2 years due to a lot of tuition fees.
There are several things and skills that I learned in the environment of Canada. People have very busy life, espacially students beacuse they have to do jobs with their studies. I learned how to manage our work and studies, social skills, decision-making, problem-solving which are very significant for me in future. French language that is a Canadian language I learned by taking some online classes. So, now I can talk to everyone in both languages.
Doing studies in overseas countries are very magnificant for students because they can learn some practical knowledge that is not possible in India. They involve with other religions people. Thus, this is important.
See you soon.
Best wishes,
Raman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You mentioned where you studied ("Regina, Canada" at the "University of Regina"), described what you learned about the country, specifically regarding the busy lifestyle and language, and explained how the experience was helpful for your studies. Your tone is generally friendly and appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister, fulfilling the communicative purpose well. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed, particularly when discussing tuition fees, which shifts the focus away from the main prompt requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure all elaborations directly support the core tasks, such as detailing specific academic benefits rather than financial hurdles.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a clear overall progression and follows a logical structure from greeting to sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as your background, your learnings about Canada, and the general benefits of studying abroad. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like "Thus, this is important" feel abrupt and lack smooth integration. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as "I converted it into 2 years." Despite these minor cohesion flaws, the letter is easy to follow and the overall logical arrangement is sound.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message to the reader. You attempt some less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as "decision-making," "problem-solving," and "practical knowledge." However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that affect precision, such as "come in Canada" instead of "come to Canada," "espacially" instead of "especially," and "Univiersity." Furthermore, phrases like "converted it into 2 years" lack idiomatic naturalness. While these lexical slips do not impede communication, they prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as relative clauses ("that are very significant for me in future"). There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures present, such as prepositions ("come in Canada" instead of "come to Canada" and "in overseas countries" instead of "overseas" or "in overseas countries" used awkwardly) and article usage ("a Canadian language"). Additionally, spelling and punctuation are occasionally flawed. Nevertheless, the majority of your simple sentences are clear, and your errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to fully grasp your intended meaning.
