Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, she clearly stated where she studied by mentioning that she pursued her master's from London. Second, she described what she learned about the country, noting aspects such as the vibrant nightlife and the supportive nature of the local people, describing the place as 'like heaven.' Third, she explained how the year abroad was helpful for her studies by mentioning how making friends in the university helped her with her coursework. The tone is mostly appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister, although the opening contains slight confusion regarding names. Overall, the task is fully covered, warranting a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has an identifiable overall arrangement divided into logical paragraphs. The writer uses basic cohesive devices and referencing ('In my time', 'Then', 'where', 'there'), though some transitions are a bit mechanical or abrupt, such as shifting suddenly to london's nightlife without a smooth bridge. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction from the main body points, but referencing within sentences can occasionally be unclear, as seen in the confusion around pronouns and names at the start. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is generally clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating personal experiences and opinions. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'recieved' instead of 'received', 'speaning' instead of 'spending', 'pursched' instead of 'pursued', and 'accomodation' with a single 'm'. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding communication. The writer attempts some less common phrases like 'supportive' and 'admire', but spelling inaccuracies and slight unnatural collocations ('interest of area') prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, such as lowercase 'i', missing apostrophes, and run-on sentences like 'I found london very interesting, I learned a lot of things by living there.' Punctuation is often neglected, and capitalization rules are not consistently followed for proper nouns like 'london' and 'priya'. Nevertheless, the meaning remains mostly clear to the reader, and the grammar errors do not fundamentally impede overall communication, placing it squarely in the mid-band range.
