Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Kelly,
I hope you're doing well. Sam mentioned that you're thinking about spending a year studying abroad, and since I recently did the same thing, I'd love to tell you about my experience.
I spent my year at Durham College in Canada, which is located in the Greater Toronto Area. I chose it after consulting several education agents, mainly because of its practical programs and affordable tuition.
Living there taught me a lot about Canada. What struck me most was how multicultural it is. My classmates came from all over the world, and people are genuinely welcoming to newcomers. I also learnt that Canadians are extremely polite, and that the winters are far colder than I ever imagined!
In terms of my studies, the year was incredibly helpful. Classes involved a lot of group projects and presentations, so my communication skills and confidence improved enormously. I also had to manage my own schedule, which made me a much more organized and independent learner.
If you have any questions, feel free to message me anytime. Good luck with your decision!
Best wishes,
Harsh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You have fully and effectively addressed all parts of the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You successfully told the reader where you studied by mentioning Durham College in Canada, described what you learned about the country (its multiculturalism, politeness of the people, and cold winters), and explained why the year abroad was helpful for your studies through improved communication skills and independent learning. The tone is entirely appropriate for a friendly letter to a friend's sister, maintaining a warm and encouraging register from beginning to end. Ideas are well-supported and relevant throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Your letter is logically organized and easy to follow. You use a clear paragraph structure where each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introductory context to the location, cultural insights, academic benefits, and finally a friendly sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'which is located', 'mainly because of', 'What struck me most', and 'In terms of my studies' are used naturally and effectively to guide the reader through the text. Referencing is clear throughout, contributing to a seamless reading experience.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suitable for this general training task. You incorporate good collocations and less common lexical items such as 'multicultural', 'affordable tuition', 'independent learner', and 'practical programs'. Word choice is generally precise and appropriate for the context. There are no notable spelling or word choice errors, showing a strong command of everyday and semi-formal vocabulary appropriate for the task requirements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
Your writing displays a very good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I chose it after consulting several education agents, mainly because of its practical programs and affordable tuition' and 'Classes involved a lot of group projects and presentations, so my communication skills and confidence improved enormously.' The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you demonstrate solid control over punctuation and verb tenses. Grammatical control is consistently high, allowing for clear and natural communication without any noticeable errors.
