Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sara,
I hope you are doing well. I was so happy to hear that you are thinking about spending a year studying abroad. Your brother told me you wanted to know about my experience.
Last year, I studied in the UK of one year as part of my course. I was at the University of Manchester. It is a very big and famous university. During my time, I learned British culture. The people are very kind, friendly, and polite. I visited historical places like London Tower and learn about their history. I also made new friends.
This year was very help for my studies. I learned new education system which made me more confident and independent. I also improved my communication skills.
I would strongly suggest you to go for it. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. At first you feel uncomfortable and homesick, but it wil make you stronger. I am sure you will love it and you will never regret your decision.
Best wishes,
Fatima.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing where you studied in the UK, what you learned about the country, and how the experience helped your studies. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for a friend's sister. However, some bullet points are more fully developed than others. For instance, while the description of the university is clear, the explanation of what you learned about the country is slightly general, mentioning only that people are kind and visiting historical places like the London Tower. To reach a higher level, these ideas could be extended with more specific personal reflections or cultural insights, ensuring all parts of the task receive equal depth of development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the greeting to the closing. Each paragraph has a clear focus: the introduction sets the context, the second paragraph addresses the location and cultural experiences, the third discusses academic benefits, and the final paragraph offers encouragement. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical, relying on simple linking words and referencing that could be smoother. For example, sentences in the second paragraph follow one another without strong transitional markers to connect the point about culture to the mention of visiting historical places. Improving the flow between sentences and using a wider variety of cohesive devices would elevate the organisational quality of the writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is used to complete the task successfully, demonstrating an ability to talk about personal experiences and studies. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as once in a lifetime opportunity and independent. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and word choice issues, such as writing in the UK of one year instead of for one year, learn instead of learned in the past tense, and help instead of helpful in the phrase this year was very help. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a limited precision in word choice and form. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for greater control over word forms and incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and successfully employing some subordination and modal verbs, such as in I hope you are doing well and I am sure you will love it. There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as missing articles in learned British culture instead of British culture or new education system instead of a new education system, and a minor spelling error in wil instead of will. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To move further up the scale, you would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate more consistent accuracy with articles and prepositions.
