Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Jhanvi,

I got your letter just yesterday in which u have queries about studying abroad . I am here in Canada from last two years for my study and i just done with my studies two months ago .

I reached here in 2024 in one of the popular province which is ontario and my college is located here in Brampton area named as Sheridan college. I took course related to hotel and management . I learnt many new skills or techniques about serving and how to deal with the people who visit there.

I suggest you to apply here in September month in the course whichever u want . This college contains all courses related to different streams and good thing is that all the staff here are so friendly and always come forward to help their students . And students who got good grades also have chances to win sponsorships.

In which year i come there i have such a good friends in my batch, so we have good time and we took part in different actvities through this time . But i gave you surity that u will definitely love this college if u will get admission here . If u wanna discuss anything else about college or any another stuff u can call me on my number.

Looking for your respond .

Gurpal Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the prompt by mentioning where you studied in Canada, touching upon what you learned regarding hotel management, and offering advice and suggestions to the friend's sister. However, the treatment of the bullet points is only partial and somewhat limited in development. For instance, the description of what was learned about the country and the course remains rather basic, stating simply that you 'learnt many new skills or techniques about serving'. The position is evident and the letter format is attempted with an appropriate opening and closing, but the overall development of ideas is restricted. To achieve a higher level, all parts of the task need to be fully and thoroughly extended with richer detail and clearer explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident in the letter, separating the introduction, course details, college recommendations, and final remarks into distinct paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression between sentences and ideas, making the flow feel somewhat disjointed. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, such as the repetitive use of 'and' or sudden shifts between topics without smooth transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'In which year i come there i have such a good friends in my batch'. To improve, the letter would benefit from a wider range of logical connectors and a more unified paragraph structure that clearly guides the reader through the narrative.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the purpose of writing a personal letter. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as non-standard word choices and spelling mistakes like 'actvities', 'surity', and 'respond' instead of response. The student attempts some less common phrases like 'popular province' and 'sponsorships', but these are accompanied by frequent slips in word form and collocation, such as 'I took course related to hotel and management' and 'in September month'. While communication is generally maintained despite these errors, expanding the range of vocabulary and ensuring greater precision in word selection and spelling are necessary to progress to higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic coordination. Attempts at complex sentences often contain structural faults and errors, such as 'I am here in Canada from last two years for my study and i just done with my studies two months ago'. There are frequent errors in tense usage, prepositions, articles, and pronouns, including 'in ontario', 'course whichever u want', and 'Looking for your respond'. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent throughout the letter. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex grammatical forms with better control over verb tenses and agreement.
