Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Vaibhavi,

I was really happy to hear that ypu are considering spending a year abroad as part of your university course. Since I resently had a smililar experience, I would be glad to share some information with you.

During my year aboad, I studied finance and focused mainly on investment management, innternational banking and financial markets. The course was very interesting because we has practical assigments and opportunities to work on real -life financial cases.

Living in another country also tought me a lot about its culture and lifestyle. I learned that people were generally punctual , indedependent and respectful and personal space. I also had the opportunity to try local food, visit different places and meet people from various cultural background. This helps me became more open-minded and confident.

Most importantly, the year abroad was extremely helpful for my studies. I improved my communication and problem-solving skills and gained a better understanding of how financial system work internationally. I also become more independent because I had to manage my studies, finances and daily responsibilities on my own.

I would definitely recommend studying abroad because it is both an educational and personal learning experience.

Best wishes,

Latika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the bullet points by clearly stating where you studied finance, describing what you learned about the local culture and lifestyle, and explaining how the experience benefited your studies and personal independence. Your position and purpose remain clear throughout the response. To move to a higher band, some of the ideas could be extended further with more specific detail, such as naming the exact city or university where you were based, rather than keeping the location general. However, all requirements of the prompt are covered adequately and relevantly, presenting a clear and polite tone suited to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening greeting right through to the final sign-off. You use paragraphing appropriately to separate different themes, such as your academic focus in the second paragraph, cultural observations in the third, and academic benefits in the fourth. Cohesive devices like 'During my year abroad', 'Living in another country also', and 'Most importantly' are used effectively to guide the reader smoothly through your ideas. To achieve an even higher level of cohesion, you could vary your transitional phrases further and ensure referencing within sentences is tighter, avoiding any slight mechanical feel in how your paragraphs connect.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'investment management', 'international banking', and 'open-minded'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'ypu', 'resently', 'smililar', 'aboad', 'tought', 'indedependent', and 'innternational', along with word-choice slips like 'cultural background' instead of 'backgrounds'. These minor vocabulary and spelling errors do not impede communication, placing your lexical control securely in the range where adequate control is shown alongside some inaccuracies. Eliminating these slip-ups through careful proofreading is necessary to reach higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You show a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures effectively, such as in 'I would definitely recommend studying abroad because it is both an educational and personal learning experience.' There are some grammar and punctuation errors, including missing prepositions or incorrect articles in phrases like 'respectful and personal space' and 'how financial system work', alongside minor verb tense slips like 'we has practical assignments' and 'This helps me became'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid command of sentence patterns with occasional persistent mistakes.
