Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by telling the reader where you studied, describing what you learned about the country, and explaining why it was helpful for your studies. For instance, you clearly state that you attended Calgary University and explain how exposure to diverse cultures helped you understand different values and rituals. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the mention of practical knowledge and job opportunities is relevant, it remains somewhat general and lacks further extension to reach a higher level of thoroughness. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout, matching the requirements of a letter to a friend's sister.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of ideas, moving logically from the initial greeting and purpose of the letter to specific details about the university, cultural learning, and academic benefits. Paragraphing is used to separate different points, and basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Nevertheless', and 'Furthermore' are employed to guide the reader. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in its transitions, and referencing is occasionally affected by minor mechanical slips, indicating that while the organisation is clear overall, more flexible and subtle cohesive links are needed to achieve top-tier progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your personal experiences and recommendations. You attempt less common lexical items, such as 'fit as a fiddle', 'diverse cultures', and 'practical knowledge'. Nevertheless, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'renowded' instead of renowned, 'avliable' instead of available, 'lefting' instead of leaving, 'studing' instead of studying, 'theorical' instead of theoretical, 'hand on' instead of hands-on, 'eassy' instead of easy, 'aslo' also, 'hessistate' hesitate, and 'lusk' luck. These errors occasionally distract the reader, though communication is not severely impaired.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'which is situated in the heart of city' and 'which would be helpful to you'. There is a reasonable attempt at managing different verb tenses and structures. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('heart of city'), preposition issues, and subject-verb agreement mistakes like 'scholars from different countries was enrolled' instead of were enrolled, and 'teaching... are more based' instead of is more based. These errors occur across the text, reflecting a control level that allows meaning to be understood while pointing to the need for greater grammatical accuracy in complex clauses.
