Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Charmy,

It's always nice hearing from you. I'm glad that you opted for a foreign course to enhance your skills. Let me tell you, it will be a life changing experience for you.

I was in a Complex Care Nursing program in Georgian College (Orangeville campus). Despite being nervous in initial phase, it turned out to be the best year of my life in terms of education, fun and most importantly knowing how Canadian Health Care System works. Moreover, the experience was incredible as all the faculty members of the course were having expertise in the field.

In addition, I also learnt about country's culture, traditions and occasions they celebrate all around the year. The people over there are incredibly humble and ready to help anyone who is in need. That was one of the best thing I gained from their lives.

If I talk about its worthiness, it is beyond an individual's expectation. This course has no only helped me to gain essential skills but also helped me to see nursing through different perspective. Earlier I used to take nursing just as giving medications to patients and documenting it, whereas now I see it as a holistic approach which has made my practical abilities more efficient.

I hope this new phase of your life turns out to be the best one. Let me know if anything else you want to know from my side.

With love,

Anushka

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three points clearly: you identify Georgian College’s Orangeville campus, describe learning about Canadian healthcare and local culture, and explain how the experience changed your understanding of nursing. The contrast between seeing nursing as “giving medications” and viewing it as “a holistic approach” gives the final point useful personal detail. The friendly opening and closing also suit the relationship and purpose. Some description remains broad, however: “culture, traditions and occasions” does not give a specific example of what you discovered, and the benefit to your studies could be linked more directly to your university coursework. Adding one concrete cultural observation and a clearer academic example would make the ideas more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression from greeting, to your study experience, to cultural learning, to its academic value, and finally to a warm closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, and connectors such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “If I talk about its worthiness” signal relationships between ideas. The sequence is easy to follow, though some transitions feel formulaic, and the final paragraph moves quickly from the course’s value to a general reflection on nursing. A more direct link between the cultural paragraph and the explanation of academic benefits would strengthen the progression. You could also vary linking phrases and use clearer references where “it” or “their lives” may leave the intended meaning uncertain.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range for a personal letter, including topic-specific expressions such as “Canadian Health Care System,” “faculty members,” “practical abilities,” and “holistic approach.” These choices communicate your experience effectively, and the tone is generally warm and appropriate. Some collocations and phrases are less natural, including “in initial phase,” “the best thing I gained from their lives,” and “see nursing through different perspective.” “Worthy” language in “If I talk about its worthiness” also sounds awkward in this context. These occasional inaccuracies do not prevent understanding, but more precise, idiomatic phrasing would show greater flexibility and control. Prefer expressions such as “during the initial phase,” “what I learned from the people,” and “from a different perspective.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

There is a useful mix of sentence forms, including the complex contrast beginning “Despite being nervous” and the longer sentence explaining how your view of nursing changed. Most ideas remain clear, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “faculty members … were having expertise” uses an unsuitable verb form; “the best thing” needs plural agreement with “one of”; and “has no only helped” should be “has not only helped.” Articles and prepositions also need attention in “in initial phase” and “in Georgian College.” The sentence beginning “Earlier I used to take nursing…” would benefit from clearer punctuation and structure. Review verb patterns, agreement, and articles, then proofread longer sentences for accuracy.
