Dear........,
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Stacey,
I am glad to hear that you are considering moving France to study a year under the exchange program. As you are aware that I recently did that myself, I will wanted to share my experience with you that will help you in making decisions.
I opted for French linguistics program and it turned out better than I imagined. In addition to the language, I learnt alot about French culture, their environment and history. I spent just a year there and I assure you, you are looking at an amazing experience of your lifetime.
In the start, you may be find yourself wondering how these people actually perform their tasks. Because the work life balance there is out of this world, you won't find anywhere else. People take long breaks and enjoy lunch time freely with no strings attached. And the best thing, you are not expected to engage in any work related tasks outside your business hours, amazing isn't it?
Now let me share some background on studies. The culture and experience taught me more French than I had acquired over the period of 4 years. I believe that once you know enough, engaging in real life conversations and the native people help you understand the context more than just practicing and learning through books.
I hope you enjoy your stay to the fullest and come back having learned many new things. Feel free to reach out to me in case you have any further questions.
Regards,
Saif

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The letter responds to the situation and covers the three requested areas: it identifies France, describes aspects of French culture and working life, and explains how immersion and conversations with native speakers improved your French. The explanation of study benefits is the clearest part, especially the contrast with learning from books. However, the location is not stated precisely (for example, a city or university is missing), and the description of what you learnt focuses heavily on work-life balance rather than broader learning about the country. Some claims, such as “you won't find anywhere else,” are general rather than supported by personal detail. Develop the country description with a specific observation and make the study benefit more concrete to address the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening, paragraphs on the experience and its benefits, and a suitable closing. The progression from your initial response to cultural observations and then academic value is generally understandable. However, the paragraph beginning “In the start” shifts into advice about work-life balance, which interrupts the focus on what you learnt about France and how the year helped your studies. Some links are also awkward or unclear, such as “Now let me share some background on studies,” and the repeated use of “And” to begin sentences makes the flow feel mechanical. Group related points more tightly and use clearer transitions to show how each observation connects to the task.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including relevant terms such as “exchange program,” “French linguistics,” “work life balance,” and “real life conversations.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and phrases such as “to the fullest” suit the friendly tone. There are, however, some inaccurate or informal choices that reduce precision: “moving France” does not express studying in France, “alot” is incorrectly written as one word, and “business hours” is less natural in this context than a phrase about working hours. “Amazing experience of your lifetime” is also an overstatement. Aim for more precise collocations and a consistent, natural register while retaining the approachable tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I believe that once you know enough, engaging in real life conversations and the native people help you understand the context.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some errors in verb forms, sentence construction, and articles are noticeable. For example, “I will wanted to share” combines incompatible verb forms, “As you are aware that” has an unnecessary construction, and “you may be find yourself” uses an incorrect verb pattern. “I am glad to hear that you are considering moving France” also needs a grammatical link before the country name. Review verb patterns and clause structure, then proofread for these errors; more consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the writing.
