Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Amna,
I was delighted to hear that you are planning to undertake a course abroad. I'd like to share my experience with you.
Last year, I took a course in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics at the the University of Toronto, which is located at the University Avenue in Downtown, Toronto. It was a twelve month course and after its completion I received a certificate from the university.
During my stay in Canada, I had a chance to interact with people of different cultures and traditions. Moreover, there are wonderful Italian and Mediterranean restaurants but they are very costly. I was fortunate enough to try most of them with my friends. I 'd like to tell you about Niagara Falls, which is a breathtaking place in Canada, and people from different parts of the world come here to get a sight of it.
Studying abroad for a year proved to be very helpful for me, as it strengthened my clinical skills. Moreover, I got a chance to learn from some of the experts in the Prosthodontics field. Such professional exposures enhance our logical reasoning abilities and I would therefore advice you to not miss this opportunity of studying abroad. I'd be glad to help you if you need any further assisstance.
I wish you all the best.
Your friend,
Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points: you identify the University of Toronto, describe aspects of Canadian life and tourism, and explain that the year strengthened your clinical skills and gave you access to expert teaching. The advice to take the opportunity also suits the purpose of writing to someone considering study abroad. Your ideas are relevant and generally supported with details, such as trying restaurants with friends and seeing Niagara Falls. To make the account more fully developed, explain more specifically what you learnt about Canadian culture or daily life, rather than relying mainly on a list of cultural diversity, restaurants, and a landmark. A little more detail about how the clinical learning supported your university studies would also strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from its opening, through your study location and experience in Canada, to the academic benefits and closing advice. Paragraphing separates these stages effectively, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “therefore” help show relationships between ideas. The friendly opening and sign-off are appropriate for the recipient. At times, however, “Moreover” is used to introduce ideas that are not closely connected, and the paragraph about Canada moves quickly from cultural diversity to restaurants and Niagara Falls. Use more precise transitions or group related details together so the progression within that paragraph feels more deliberate. Overall, the organisation is clear, with some room to make cohesion less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including relevant specialist terms such as “Maxillofacial Prosthodontics,” “clinical skills,” and “logical reasoning abilities.” Descriptive choices such as “breathtaking” also add interest, and the tone remains suitably friendly. There are occasional inaccuracies or awkward collocations that limit precision: “get a sight of it” is not a natural expression, and “professional exposures” is unclear in this context. The phrase “undertake a course abroad” is understandable but does not quite match the year-long study experience described. Aim for natural combinations such as “see the falls,” “professional experience,” and “study abroad for a year.” These refinements would make your vocabulary more fluent and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful variety of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which is located…” and a complex explanation beginning “as it strengthened my clinical skills.” Many sentences are clear and accurately controlled, and the reader can follow the account without difficulty. A few errors remain. In “at the the University,” the article is repeated; “I would therefore advice you” needs the verb form “advise”; and “I’d like” is inconsistently spaced as “I 'd like.” The sentence about the course being twelve months long could also be expressed more naturally as “It was a twelve-month course.” Review articles, verb forms, and punctuation around contractions while retaining the range of structures you already use.
