Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Cheryl,
How are you doing? I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing regarding the wonderful news your sister shared with me yesterday, concerning your plans to study abroad for one year as part of your University course.
During my time, I chose University of east London, located at the eastern part of London,England. Where I majored in MSC biomedical science. I was particular about the school due to their global standard of education and international research standard.
United Kingdom is known globally for their advance in education, rooted in cuture and friendly atmostphere. East London taught me patience and tolerance, having to adapt to a new culture and environment was a bit difficult, however their great hospitality made adjusting much faster.
Within my stay in London, having to futher my education in MSC biomedical science expanded my knowledge on both clinical science and disease control. I was able to work with advanced technology, adapt to international method of studying, meet important personnels with the same interest. which was very much impactful to my academic life.
You can always call me for more guidance and information, I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Emela.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points in the task: you identify the University of East London, describe aspects of life and culture in the UK, and explain how the course supported your academic development. The explanation of the study benefits is particularly relevant, with examples such as learning about clinical science and disease control and working with advanced technology. Your comments about patience, tolerance, and hospitality also give the reader a personal sense of the experience. Some details remain general, however: the description of the country could include a specific cultural observation, and the academic benefits could be linked more directly to how they helped your university studies. Overall, the letter fulfils its purpose and develops the main ideas clearly, though some points could be more precisely supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the reason for writing, describe the university and country, explain academic benefits, and close with an offer of help. Paragraphing helps distinguish these topics, and phrases such as “During my time” and “Within my stay in London” guide the reader through the account. The progression is generally clear, but some links between ideas are awkward or unclear. For example, “Where I majored…” is separated from the sentence it depends on, while “which was very much impactful” does not clearly refer to one specific benefit or the whole preceding list. Use complete sentences and clearer references, and connect related details more smoothly to make the organisation feel less interrupted.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “global standard,” “adapt to a new culture,” “clinical science,” and “advanced technology,” which helps communicate your experience. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, appropriate for a letter about university study. However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice or collocation errors reduce precision, such as “atmostphere,” “futher,” “personnels,” and “international method of studying.” Some expressions are also vague or unnatural, including “rooted in cuture” and “important personnels.” Choose more natural combinations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary for cultural experiences and academic skills would make the account clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex structures, including the contrast in “having to adapt to a new culture and environment was a bit difficult, however their great hospitality made adjusting much faster.” The reader can generally understand your message, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation are evident. “Where I majored in MSC biomedical science” is a fragment, and “which was very much impactful to my academic life” is also not a complete sentence. The long sentence beginning “Within my stay in London” contains several ideas that would be clearer if divided and connected with accurate clauses. There are also issues with articles, capitalisation, and comma use. Practise forming complete sentences and punctuating complex sentences consistently.
