Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mable,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to describe about my experience when I was in Canada for my university education.
I stayed in a three bedroom apartment with my two other schoolmates near to the university during my studies. The residency, where I lived was extremely peaceful and clean. We had all the amenities, such as shopping outlet, grocery shops, pharmacies nearby. Moreover, I stayed in a single room there, all my electricity bill and the water bill were included in my rent.
Canada is extremely gorgeous in the winter. However, we should pack the necessity items to survive there in that weather. Mainly, their culture, eating habbits and the hobbies are entirely different from us. Canadian are very polite and welcoming in general.
It was my dream to get thorough exposure in the practical aspects of my programme, which I fullfilled after coming here. Also , I received a lot of opportunities to learn about new equipment and its working principles.
I wish you the best for your studies . Always remember to follow what your heart says.
Best wishes,
KEE

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter covers all three requested points: you identify Canada as the destination, describe aspects of Canadian life, and explain that the year gave you practical exposure and access to new equipment. These details make the response relevant and generally clear. However, the accommodation description takes up considerable space without directly explaining what you learnt about the country, and the study benefit is only briefly stated. Develop these points more specifically—for example, describe a particular cultural difference you experienced and explain how using the equipment or applying practical knowledge supported your university coursework. The friendly closing suits the recipient, but a little more personal advice based on your experience would make the letter feel more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the purpose of the letter, moves through accommodation and life in Canada, then explains the academic benefit before closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these topics, and connectors such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “Also” guide the reader. At times, though, the links between ideas are mechanical or not fully logical. For instance, the paragraph about the apartment and bills is detailed but does not clearly connect to the requested learning experience. The shift from “Canada is extremely gorgeous in the winter” to packing necessities could be made more explicit. Use transitions that show how each example relates to the country or your studies, and ensure references such as “there” and “here” have clear meanings.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including “amenities,” “practical aspects,” “exposure,” and “working principles.” These choices help communicate both daily-life and academic experiences. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions, such as “describe about my experience,” “near to the university,” and “Canadian are very polite.” Spelling and word-form slips—including “habbits” and “fullfilled”—also reduce accuracy, although the intended meaning remains understandable. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary for cultural learning and academic development would also help you explain your experience with greater clarity rather than relying on broad statements such as “entirely different from us.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms. For example, “The residency, where I lived was extremely peaceful and clean” attempts a relative clause, while “However, we should pack the necessity items to survive there in that weather” combines ideas in a longer structure. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. Examples include the missing comma after “where I lived,” the agreement error in “Canadian are,” and inconsistent spacing around punctuation in “Also ,” and “studies .” The phrase “when I was in Canada for my university education” is also less precise for describing a completed year abroad. Review subject–verb agreement, clause punctuation, and tense choices, and practise using complex sentences accurately.
