Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Nonu,

I hope you are doing well.

I recently got your mail and I am happy that you will be starting the final year of your course soon. I recently finished my final year and I am delighted to share my experience with you as you asked.

I finished my final year and course in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada at University of Waterloo. I did my bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management. As you already know, I finished first three years in India and I moved to Canada afterwards. During the first six months, I studied a lot of theoretical subjects such as Global Supply Chain Management, Global Procurement and Global Logistics. I spent last six months of my course doing an internship at Amazon Canada. Afterwards, I was hired by Amazon India as a Supply Chain Analyst when I returned from Canada.

I personally felt that the time I spent abroad during my final year was really helpful for me and because of that I managed to get a job at Amazon India right after graduation. The good thing about canadian education system is that it is not only focused on theory; it also encourage students to get their hands on practical training as well.

I hope you also enjoy your time studying abroad. Looking forward to seeing you before your departure.

Best wishes,

Dhruv

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the three requested points, but they are not covered equally fully. The location is specific—Kitchener, Ontario, and the University of Waterloo—and you explain that the year included study and an internship. You also give a relevant reason the experience helped, linking practical training to getting a job at Amazon India. However, the task asks what you learnt about the country, and this is only touched on through a general comment about the Canadian education system; add a personal observation about Canada or its culture to answer this more directly. The letter is appropriately friendly, but the repeated details about finishing your degree could be replaced with fuller reflection on what you learnt and how it supported your studies.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: greeting and introduction, details of your studies and internship, an explanation of the benefit, and a friendly closing. The sequence is easy to follow, and phrases such as “During the first six months” and “Afterwards” help show chronology. Some connections are less smooth or repetitive, particularly the repeated statements that you “finished” your final year, and the transition from describing the internship to explaining the education system’s practical focus could be clearer. The paragraphing is appropriate, though the central information could be grouped more deliberately around the three points in the prompt. Using clearer references and reducing repetition would make the progression feel more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including relevant academic and employment terms such as “Global Procurement,” “internship,” and “Supply Chain Analyst.” These details make the experience specific, and the tone is generally suitable for writing to someone you know. There is also some variety in expressions such as “delighted to share” and “hands-on practical training.” To show more flexible and precise control, avoid repeated general wording such as “helpful” and “good thing,” and choose expressions that describe the learning outcome more exactly. A few collocations and word forms are awkward, including “finished my final year and course” and “it also encourage students”; refining these would make the language sound more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains clear. For example, “I hope you also enjoy your time studying abroad” is accurate and natural, while the sentence explaining that you studied in India before moving to Canada conveys a more complex sequence. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. In “it is not only focused on theory; it also encourage students,” the verb should agree with “it” (“encourages”), and “at University of Waterloo” needs an article (“at the University of Waterloo”). The sentence beginning “I personally felt…” is also awkwardly joined; separating the idea about the experience from its career result would improve control. Check articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries during revision.
