Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Payal,

I am writing to reply your previous letter. I think, it is a good idea to persue your study abroad as part of university course.

I would like to share my personal experience. I came to Canada in April, 2023. I studied in the Conestoga college, Kitchener. Later, I got my workpermit after a year. Now, I am a proud permanent resident of this country. It has been difficult journy but now, I am happy with my life.

One of the most important lessons I learned from this country is that how to respect every individual. In Canada, it does not matter if you are native or immigrant. If you are worthy enough to work than you will get a job. In addition, here, people celebrate all festivals of each culture.

I am having very fantastic life in abroad. However, everything started with that one year study program. Once, I started studying here than I understood Canadian life style. It helped me to take decision to live in this country for the rest of my life which helped me to become a successful.

I look forward to hearing from you regarding your university course. I am always available to help you. Take care!

Your sincerely,

Meet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you identify Conestoga College in Kitchener, describe learning about respect and cultural celebrations in Canada, and explain that studying there helped you understand Canadian life and decide to stay. The purpose is clear and the friendly tone suits a letter to someone you know. However, the explanation of how the year abroad helped your university studies is less fully developed than the other points: the response focuses mainly on your later decision to live in Canada, rather than on academic benefits such as subject knowledge, study skills, or applying course content. Develop this link more directly and add a specific example of what you learned that supported your studies to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, paragraphs about your experience and lessons from Canada, an explanation of the year’s impact, and a suitable closing. This makes the main ideas easy to follow. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. For example, “However, everything started with that one year study program” does not clearly contrast with the preceding sentence, and “which helped me to become a successful” leaves the reference and meaning unclear. Use linking words only when their relationship is accurate, and make references explicit. A clearer progression from where you studied, to what you learned, to how this benefited your academic work would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including relevant expressions such as “permanent resident,” “individual,” and “celebrate all festivals.” The language is generally understandable, but several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision and naturalness: “persue,” “journy,” and “workpermit” are inaccurate forms, while “very fantastic life” and “become a successful” are not natural expressions in this context. Some phrases are also broad, such as “Canadian life style,” where a more precise description could help explain what you learned. Check spelling and collocations carefully, and choose vocabulary that expresses the academic benefit of studying abroad more specifically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If you are worthy enough to work than you will get a job” and a relative clause beginning “which helped me.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. Examples include “reply your previous letter” (missing “to”), “I think, it is” (unnecessary comma), “Once, I started studying here than I understood” (incorrect clause construction), and “I am having very fantastic life” (article and tense choice). Practise accurate sentence patterns with “once,” “if,” and “which,” and review articles and verb forms. More reliable control of these structures would make your ideas clearer.
