Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Maria,

I hope you are doing well. My sister told me that you are going to Canada for your university course and you want me to share my experience with you. Well i studied in the University of Ontario, which was a really great experience.

If a talk about the weather, it's extremely cold there and the fun part is that you don't have to wear plenty of clothes or sweaters ,we just have to wear specially designed jackets to protect our body which is really amazing. Secondly, you don't have to worry about heaters to fix the home temperature because there is in-built warm water circulation inside the house which keeps it warm and comfortable.

Overall my decision of studying abroad really helped me well in grooming my personality, because you know when you start your journey by living alone at a strange and unkown country, it gives you exposure to many things.

Challenges make us strong.I suggest you to never miss this chance of studying abroad and face challenges.

Yours Sincerely,

Munazzah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the three requested points to some extent: you name the University of Ontario, describe cold weather and home heating, and explain that living independently gave you exposure and helped develop your personality. However, the account of what you learnt about the country is narrow, focusing almost entirely on practical aspects of the climate, and the academic benefit is not explained clearly. For example, “helped me well in grooming my personality” describes personal growth rather than how the experience supported your university studies. Add a specific academic example, such as improved subject knowledge, research skills, or language ability, and develop your observations about Canada beyond the weather to make the letter more fully responsive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening, paragraphs about the experience, and a closing recommendation. The sequence from your study location to observations and then personal benefits is generally understandable. However, progression is limited: the second paragraph gives two weather-related details, while the final paragraphs move quickly from personal growth to advice without explaining the academic connection. Some linking is mechanical, particularly “Secondly” and “Overall,” and the transition from the description of housing to the broader reflection is abrupt. Organise the body around the three requested points and use clearer links between them—for instance, connect living independently to a specific skill that helped with your studies.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “exposure,” “designed jackets,” and “warm water circulation.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “grooming my personality,” although this phrase is not a natural collocation in this context. Other choices, including “strange and unkown country” and “fix the home temperature,” are imprecise or awkward, and the spelling error in “unkown” is noticeable. The repeated use of general terms such as “really great” and “many things” limits precision. Choose more natural expressions and specific vocabulary—for example, describe adapting to a new culture or gaining independence, rather than relying on broad claims.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes some longer sentence forms, such as the sentence beginning “because you know when you start your journey,” and most of the message remains understandable. However, control is inconsistent, especially when clauses are combined. Examples include “If a talk about the weather” and “you don't have to worry about heaters to fix the home temperature because there is in-built warm water circulation,” where the sentence patterns are faulty or awkward. There are also errors in capitalisation and punctuation, such as “Well i” and “strong.I,” as well as inconsistent comma spacing. Practise building accurate complex sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and proofread sentence boundaries, capital letters, and punctuation.
