Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Susan,
I hope you are doing well, its great to hear from you after long time. Last we met when you were in high school. How is Sherlock doing currently at her work ! We lost the touch after our graduation at college. I will list my experience that might be helpful to get an overview of what to expect.
In my time at university, I went to Vienna for a year as it was considered as the heart of Artistic designs in the architecture and Museums. I enrolled in the Vienna art centre of excellence for design. It was great way to connect with the people with different perspectives, motive and vision which inspires me to dive american contribution to the world.
With the time in study, Vienna's vibe while exploring city and seeing the people carrying themselves with the designer clothes one thing was clear the way 'How you express yourself says lot about one's personality' that statement stands correct. As person that clarity to understand the person, interacting with the surrounding while experiencing nature had deep profound impact on my personality.
The requirement to have that experience to study abroad made my mind open and broaden the mindset to accept and moveforward in the life. There are few more countries you can go to Australia, France, Germany and others which should be helpful for your study.
Yours Truly,
Alice

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the three requested areas: you identify Vienna as your destination, mention its architecture and museums, and explain that studying abroad broadened your outlook. These details make the letter relevant, but the country-learning point is mostly expressed as a general reflection on fashion and personality rather than specific things you learned about Austria or its culture. The academic benefit is also unclear: “open and broaden the mindset” describes personal growth, but you do not explain how the experience helped your university studies, such as improving design skills or informing coursework. The final list of other destinations does not develop your own experience. Add concrete cultural observations and a direct link between the year abroad and your studies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The letter has a recognisable opening, several body paragraphs and a closing, and the sequence broadly moves from your destination to reflections and advice. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. For example, the sentence about Vienna’s “vibe,” designer clothes and the quoted statement shifts between observations without clearly connecting them. The transition “With the time in study” is also unclear, while “I will list my experience” promises a list that does not follow. Some references, such as “that experience,” are vague. Organise the body around the three requested points, use clear topic sentences, and connect each observation to the next with precise linking and reference.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “architecture,” “perspectives,” “vision,” and “personality,” and the reader can generally understand your main message. There are also noticeable problems with word choice and collocation that make some ideas unclear, such as “dive american contribution to the world,” “Vienna’s vibe while exploring city,” and “deep profound impact.” “Artistic designs” is not a natural way to describe the city’s architectural reputation, and “moveforward” is incorrectly written as one word. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than adding abstract or ambitious phrases. More precise vocabulary for cultural observations and academic development would make the letter clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and attempts at longer, more complex sentences, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “its great to hear from you after long time” needs an apostrophe and articles, while “Last we met when you were in high school” has an incomplete time expression. The sentence beginning “With the time in study” lacks a clear grammatical structure, and “As person that clarity to understand the person” is difficult to parse. There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary problems, including the space before the exclamation mark. Practise building complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check articles, tense, agreement and punctuation before submitting.
