Dear........,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Roma,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email regarding my study experince in Canada.
As you know, I studied Civil Engineering from Fanshawe College which is located in London city. I choose this college because they have collobration with my college in India and also they provide a practical knowledge in Construction field. I studied for a year and I also did 3 month co-op training at Highlight company.
Beside study, canada is extremely pretty in terms of weather and culture. Canadian people are very kind, polite and very helpful by nature. You will not believe but I learned cooking from starting to end. This country taught me self development, hard work and most importantly respect everyone.
My studied in Canda was helpful because I gained more practical knowledge rather than just studing from the books. This experince helped me to get high salary job when I came back India. You will be suprised hearing that I got job offer within two weeks.
I would suggest that do not miss this opportunity and try to take care of your health as Canada is more colder than India.
I hope you will find my details informative.
Let me know if have any questions.
Thanks and Regards,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you identify Fanshawe College in London, describe Canadian people and culture, and explain that practical learning helped you secure a job after returning to India. The advice about health also suits the friendly letter. The account is relevant and gives the reader useful personal details, including your co-op placement and quick job offer. However, the description of what you learnt about Canada is less fully developed than the study and career points: “self development, hard work” is broad, and the cooking example could be linked more clearly to living independently in Canada. To strengthen the response, add a specific example of how Canadian culture or daily life changed your understanding, and explain more precisely how the practical experience supported your university studies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with a greeting, moves from your college experience to life in Canada and then to the benefits of the year abroad, before closing with advice and an invitation to ask questions. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these topics, and phrases such as “Beside study” and “This experience helped me” signal connections. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, however. “Beside study” does not express the intended contrast naturally, and the repeated use of “I” at the start of sentences makes parts of the account feel list-like. The shift from learning about Canada to cooking could also be smoother. Use a wider range of natural transitions and connect examples explicitly to the point they illustrate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “Civil Engineering,” “co-op training,” “practical knowledge,” and “job offer.” There are also attempts to express personal qualities and cultural observations. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, for example “experince,” “collobration,” “suprised,” and “more colder.” Some phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “learned cooking from starting to end” and “high salary job.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, but they limit the naturalness and flexibility of the vocabulary. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for study, work, and cultural experience; choose precise phrases rather than translating expressions directly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, and the main message remains clear. For example, “I choose this college because they have…” attempts to explain a reason, while “This experience helped me to get…” communicates a result. Some grammatical errors persist in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction. Examples include “I choose” instead of “I chose,” “I studied Civil Engineering from Fanshawe College,” and “if have any questions,” which needs a subject. The sentence “I would suggest that do not miss this opportunity” also needs a clearer grammatical structure. To improve, practise past-tense forms for recounting your year abroad and check that each clause has a subject and a correctly formed verb. More accurate complex sentences would add range without obscuring meaning.
