Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sara,

I hope you are doing well.I am glad to hear that your younger sister is planning to study abroad. As i recently spent a year

studying in another country. I would like to share my experience with you.

I studied at the university of melbourn in austrailia for one year as part of my university course. It was a wonderful experience because the university had excellent facilities and highly qualified teachers. i also made dfriends with students from different countries.

During my stay I learnt alot about australian culture, lifestlye and traditions. I discovered that australians are generaly friendly and welcoming. I also learnt about their education system which encourages students to think independently and participate actively in class. Moreover i improved my english communication skills talking to local people every day.

My year abroad was extremely helpful for my studies. i gained practical knowledge and develope my confidence.

Overall i would strongly recommand to studying abroad it is a valuable experience.

I am looking farward for your response please let me know if you want more information.

Yours sincerely faryal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you identify the University of Melbourne in Australia, describe aspects of Australian culture and education, and explain that the experience built practical knowledge and confidence. The details about independent thinking and active classroom participation make the country description relevant, while improved English communication is a useful study-related benefit. However, the explanation of how the year abroad helped your university studies is less fully developed than the other points; for example, specify how the practical knowledge supported your course or what skills you could apply afterwards. The closing recommendation is appropriate, but the letter would feel more directly tailored to Sara if you offered advice based on her plans. Overall, the main purpose is clear and all task points are covered, with some ideas needing further explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, paragraphs about the university and country, an explanation of academic benefits, and a closing. This makes the main ideas easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Overall” to signal relationships between points. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical or the referencing is unclear. The opening shifts from “your younger sister” to addressing Sara, although the task asks you to write to the sister, and “I would strongly recommend to studying abroad” interrupts the flow because the construction is unclear. Improve progression by addressing the intended recipient consistently and linking each experience to its relevance for her decision. Clearer paragraph breaks and more natural transitions would make the organisation smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main experience, including relevant phrases such as “excellent facilities,” “think independently,” and “communication skills.” These choices show some range beyond basic description. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “melbourn,” “austrailia,” “dfriends,” “lifestlye,” “generaly,” and “recommand.” There are also awkward expressions such as “I am looking forward for your response” and “recommend to studying abroad,” which reduce naturalness. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall message, but they limit precision and control. Check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships, such as “look forward to hearing from you” and “recommend studying abroad.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple sentences and more developed structures, for example, “I also learnt about their education system which encourages students to think independently and participate actively in class.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present. In “As i recently spent a year studying in another country,” the dependent clause is left as a sentence fragment; connect it to the following sentence. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “i,” and the opening runs “doing well.I” together without a space. The phrase “I gained practical knowledge and develope my confidence” also needs consistent past-tense forms. Work on complete sentence boundaries, tense consistency, and accurate punctuation while continuing to use a mix of sentence structures.
