Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sarah,

I am writing this letter to share the experience I had during my Master's programme in England at London School of Economics. The reason I chose LSE is because it rated in the top 10 universities in the world and also the country in which it is situated is considered to be the land of opportunities.

The decision to study abroad especially in england was one of the best decision I ever made. As England is considered to be one of the land of one of the most sophisticated people. The native people were well manered and most helpful in all means. The country has a very strong heritage and culture, As it follows the Kingdom rule the architecture there is all influenced by the old kingdom times. The historic sights gave me the opportunity to learn about the previous kingdoms and the way Englishmen used to live.

Studying abroad enlightened me to work with the greatest researchers and professors that helped me in practrical life as well. Living there made me focus on my studies as the environment boosts your confidence and develops interest.

I would encorage you to go for the year abroad plan for you university course ans that would help you to gain unlimited knowledge and learn the culture of Englad that surely will have positive impact in you personal and professional life.

Best wishes,

Abdul Aziz Akmal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you identify the London School of Economics in England, describe aspects of English culture and history, and explain that studying with researchers and professors supported your practical learning and motivation. The letter is relevant and the recommendation to Sarah gives it a suitable purpose. However, some ideas are more fully covered than others. The description of the country focuses mainly on manners, heritage and architecture, while the study benefits are stated quite generally—for example, “the environment boosts your confidence” does not explain how this helped with your university course. Add a specific example of a skill, subject or academic experience that improved, and develop your observations about life in England.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable letter structure, with a greeting, paragraphs that broadly separate your experience and advice, and an appropriate closing. The ideas are generally understandable, but progression is not always smooth. The opening moves from your university choice to a broad claim about England, and the second paragraph combines people, culture, architecture and historical learning without clear links between them. Some connections are also awkward or repetitive, such as “The decision to study abroad especially in england” followed by another sentence beginning “As England…”. Organise the body around the three requested points, and use clearer transitions to show how each observation relates to your experience and studies.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “heritage,” “architecture,” “researchers,” and “professional life,” which helps communicate your experience. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “enlightened me” and “land of opportunities,” but some choices are unnatural or imprecise in context. “Enlightened me to work” does not clearly express the benefit you mean, and “the land of one of the most sophisticated people” is difficult to interpret. Spelling errors such as “manered,” “practrical,” and “encorage” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling; precise wording will make your descriptions clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because” and “as,” and your main message remains understandable. However, errors in agreement, sentence construction, articles and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “one of the best decision” needs plural agreement, while “As England is considered…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence. In “The country has a very strong heritage and culture, As it follows the Kingdom rule,” the comma and capitalisation create an incorrect sentence boundary, and the clause itself is awkwardly formed. Review sentence boundaries and check agreement and articles when editing. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the letter.
