Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the three requested topics: you name Oxford as your place of study, mention learning about UK culture and discipline, and explain that you gained medical techniques and heard professionals’ views. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because the details are limited and sometimes unclear. The prompt asks about a year abroad, but you say you studied for three years, which creates confusion about the experience being described. The country-learning point is also general; “rich culture” and “discipline” would be stronger with a specific example. Explain more clearly how the experience supported your university studies, such as through a particular skill or course. A more suitable greeting to your friend’s sister would also make the letter’s purpose clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure, with an opening, several paragraphs covering study, the country, and academic benefits, followed by a closing. This gives the reader some organisation. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the opening lists several purposes, and the shift from studying in Oxford to describing London is confusing. The repeated references to studying for three years also interrupt the account of a year abroad. Linking ideas more directly would help—for example, explain how observing people’s discipline influenced you, then connect that learning to your studies. Some transitions are missing, while phrases such as “I also” and “I learnt” do not always make the relationship between points clear. Use clearer paragraph focus and references to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for education and the subject area, including “university,” “culture,” “technique,” “medicine,” and “pharmacy.” These choices make the general topic understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors make the letter less clear or natural. For example, “education, I obtain” and “how many benefits” are awkward, while “individuals of this country” is vague in context. There are also noticeable spellings such as “benifits,” “decipline,” and “thier.” Aim for precise, natural phrases and check spelling carefully. For instance, “people in the UK” is clearer than “individuals of this country,” and “academic benefits” is more suitable than “how many benefits.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The letter communicates its main points, but grammatical control is inconsistent, and the sentence patterns are mostly simple or incomplete. Errors occur in verb forms and sentence construction, as in “The purpose of write this letter” and “I study here Medical,” while “I studied three years” lacks a needed preposition. Tense use also shifts between “I study,” “I studied,” and “I learn,” making the timeline difficult to follow. Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention: “discipline.I learnt” should have a space after the full stop, and the opening contains a comma splice. Try building accurate sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use past tense consistently for the completed year abroad. More controlled complex sentences would also improve the range.
