Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ria,

I hope everything is going good from your side. I recently came to know from my friend Joe that your also planing to go to the University of Toronto for pursuing Chemical Lab Technician course which I took last summer.

Talking about my experience there, University of Toronto is very renowned and it is well-known for its chemistry related courses. Therefore, I would highly recommend to you.

Additionally, Canada is a very beautiful country and you will really have a great time. I leart several things while living in the country alone. For example, doing household chores independently, cooking for myself, groceries and so on. The most defficult thing I learnt over there is, surviving in extremly cold weather. You aslo need to take care of yourself during winter especially when the temperature goes too down.

It was a woderful year for me as I gained hands-on expereince on a number of instruments such as HPLC, GC, Spectrometers and many more. In addition, this experience helped me to secure the internship in the final year of the graduation.

It is really good to hear that your going abroad for your career and wishing you all the best

Your lovingly,

Akash

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the three requested points: you identify the University of Toronto, describe aspects of life in Canada, and explain that practical experience with laboratory instruments helped you obtain an internship. These details make the letter relevant and give the reader useful information. However, the country-learning point focuses mainly on personal independence and cold weather, rather than what you learnt about Canada more broadly, and the study benefit could be explained more clearly—for example, how using HPLC or spectrometers supported your university coursework. The opening also suggests Ria is planning the same course you took, but this is not developed. Expand these ideas and make the connection to her decision more direct.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the topic, discuss the experience of living in Canada, and then explain the academic benefit before closing. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these points, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “In addition” make the progression easy to follow. This already gives the response a coherent structure. To make the organisation more polished, ensure each paragraph has a focused purpose and use transitions less formulaically. For instance, the move from recommending the university to describing household chores could be signposted as a change from study to daily life. The final sentence also runs directly into the sign-off; add appropriate punctuation and a more complete closing to make the letter’s ending feel finished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to study and laboratory work, including “hands-on experience,” “instruments,” “HPLC,” and “internship,” which helps communicate the academic value of the year. There is also some variety in describing the experience, such as “renowned” and “independently.” However, several spelling errors—“leart,” “defficult,” “extremly,” and “expereince”—are noticeable, and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “going good from your side,” “chemistry related courses,” and “temperature goes too down.” These choices limit precision even though the main meaning is generally clear. Check spelling carefully and learn natural collocations for describing study, daily life, and climate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including a relative clause in “which I took last summer” and a reason introduced by “as.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “your also planing” needs the possessive/pronoun distinction and a correctly formed verb (“you’re also planning”), while “I would highly recommend to you” lacks a clear object. The sentence beginning “The most difficult thing I learnt…” also needs more controlled punctuation and construction. Review contractions, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, and practise combining clauses accurately. Greater control of these patterns would make the letter smoother without requiring more complicated sentences.
