Dear........,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Daisy,

I hope you are well. I recieved your letter and to I am happy to help you with planning your studies abroad. To start with, I did my masters in marketing at Kingston university which is situated in ontario, Canada.

I did learn a lot throught my whole academic journey as this was my first time leaving the home country and I experieced several issues to adapt with the culture of this country. Here, everything is so organized and people respect each others time as well as privacy. The baking, tranportation etc system are quite different than our country. They have a very good online system for everything that you don't have to wait in lines for any of your essenstial requirements.

Apart from that, the course helped me a lot with my career as well as dealing with people and to make your place in market as the subjects I selected as my opt-ins taught me a lot about communication as well as to create personal brand image.

This is a good place to live and I would really recommand you to explore the courses available at this university and this city. Feel free to contact me for any further support.

Regards

Twina

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you identify Kingston University in Ontario, describe aspects of Canadian life such as respect for time and privacy, and explain how your course supported your career and communication skills. The personal, friendly tone is appropriate for writing to your friend’s sister. However, some points are only partly developed. For example, the description of the country focuses on organisation and online services but gives little detail about what you learned through specific experiences. The academic benefit is also somewhat general: explain how particular subjects or skills connect to your university studies, rather than mainly to career prospects. More specific examples would make the response feel more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: an opening, a paragraph about life in Canada, a paragraph on academic benefits, and a closing. Linking phrases such as “To start with” and “Apart from that” help signal the progression, and the reader can follow the main ideas. Some connections are less smooth, however. “I did learn a lot throughout my whole academic journey” is broad and does not clearly lead into the examples that follow, while “The baking, transportation etc system” introduces a list without explaining its relationship to the previous point. Use more precise links between each example and the main idea, and ensure references such as “this country” and “our country” are clear to the recipient.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “respect each others time,” “privacy,” “communication,” and “personal brand image.” There are also attempts to describe unfamiliar systems and cultural adjustment. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word choices reduce accuracy, including “recieved,” “throught,” “experieced,” “tranportation,” “essenstial,” and “recommand.” Phrases such as “make your place in market” and “opt-ins” are unclear or unsuitable in this context. Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as “establish yourself in the job market” and “elective courses.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and prepositions. For example, “I recieved your letter and to I am happy” contains an unnecessary “to,” while “The … system are” has a subject–verb agreement problem. “People respect each others time” also needs a possessive form, and “different than our country” is not well formed. The long sentence beginning “Apart from that” combines several ideas without a clear grammatical structure. Practise checking agreement and possessives, and divide sentences that contain several linked points into clearer clauses.
