Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Riya,

I am happy to hear about your admission at Harvard University. I am amazed your hardwork paid off. Honestly, Its not that difficult to live abroad as people are very generous there.

I studied at Conestoga College and it is few hours drive to Harvard. I did a one-year course in Food processing. Additionally, people were very co-operative including both students and professors. They always guided me when I asked them.

I never felt lonely there because my landlord was very friendly and supportive too. This country has actually taught me lot about patience and kindness. Further, people there use to celebrate small ocassions too just like getting a job or even free tickets to any movies.

Hence, that one year of studying at abroad shaped my future very bright. I came across new career opportunities and gained a lot of foreign work experience. Thus, when I returned back it was easy for me to get a job. Overall, I became much independent and confident by studying abroad.

I hope you like studying there and learn new things.Good Luck!

Yours lovingly,

Preet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you name Conestoga College, describe learning about patience and kindness in the country, and explain that the experience brought career opportunities and work experience. The personal tone and closing are appropriate for writing to a friend’s sister. However, some parts are less fully developed than others. The location is given, but the country itself is never named, and the description of what you learnt relies mainly on broad observations about people and celebrations. The study benefit is clearer, though it focuses more on employment and confidence than on how the year helped your university studies. Add specific examples of academic skills, knowledge, or coursework that you gained abroad to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information is arranged in a generally coherent sequence: you introduce the opportunity, describe your college and daily experience, then explain the longer-term benefits. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these topics, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Further,” and “Overall” guide the reader. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or do not show the relationship between ideas precisely. For example, “Hence” introduces the claim that the year shaped your future, but the connection to the preceding comments about celebrations is not clear. The reference “This country” is also unclear because the country has not been named. Use more natural transitions and make references explicit so the progression feels smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including “supportive,” “patience,” “career opportunities,” and “independent and confident.” These choices communicate your experience clearly, and the tone is suitably warm. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “admission at Harvard,” “few hours drive,” and “studying at abroad.” There are also spelling errors in “hardwork” and “ocassions,” and “use to celebrate” does not express the intended meaning naturally. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and control. Check common word partnerships and spelling, and choose expressions that fit the context rather than relying on broad phrases such as “new things.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, and most ideas remain understandable. For instance, “I never felt lonely there because my landlord was very friendly and supportive too” combines ideas effectively. Some grammatical errors remain, including missing articles in “it is few hours drive” and “taught me lot,” and the incorrect preposition pattern in “studying at abroad.” The sentence “Hence, that one year of studying at abroad shaped my future very bright” also has problems with both the construction and the complement after “shaped.” Capitalisation and punctuation need attention in “Honestly, Its” and “new things.Good Luck!” To improve, practise article use, prepositions, and sentence endings while retaining your attempts at varied sentence forms.
