Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Grace,

How are you? I'm thrilled to hear that you are coming over to my country due to your recent admission at St. James college.

I studied at a neighbouring school that is just a stone throw from St. james college and I have some few friends over there. moreso, the two schools share alot in common, especially in areas of pedagogical structure.

One thing I noticed about this country is that the weather might be challenging, particularly for new visitors from different continent. Also, you might experience deep culture shock, having that your are coming from a place of different cultural heritage. Initially when I came here, I was expecting to see some of my natives cuisine both with time I was able to blend with their diet.

My years of studing here have help me to acquire foreign qualifications that have increase my career prospect. Whats' more, I have develop a deep empathy of their culture, expanding my cultural diversity.

I look forward to seeing you!

Warm regards,

Victor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You use an appropriate friendly letter format and cover the three requested areas: you identify a nearby school, describe cultural and weather challenges, and explain that the experience supported your qualifications and career prospects. However, the location is unclear: “my country” and “this country” do not name where you studied, and the opening suggests Grace is coming to your country rather than going abroad. The description of what you learnt is relevant but general, while the study benefit is only briefly explained. To strengthen the response, clearly name the country and university, give a specific example of a cultural discovery, and explain how the experience helped your university studies, not only your career prospects.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening establishes the situation, the middle paragraphs address the experience and its benefits, and the closing is suitable for a friend. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the main topics. Some connections are less clear, however. In “Initially when I came here, I was expecting to see some of my natives cuisine both with time…,” the relationship between the expectation and the later adjustment is difficult to follow, and “moreso” does not clearly connect the school comparison to the preceding point. Use clearer transitions such as “At first…; however, over time…” and make references like “here” and “their” explicit so the reader can follow the location and people being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You show an adequate range for a personal letter, including phrases such as “culture shock,” “pedagogical structure,” “career prospect,” and “cultural diversity.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some less common expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “a stone throw,” “some few friends,” and “deep empathy of their culture.” There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “alot,” “studing,” and “natives cuisine,” which reduce precision. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling: for example, say “a short distance from,” “a few friends,” and “a deeper understanding of the culture.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the sentence beginning “One thing I noticed about this country…” and the explanation of how you adapted to local food. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. Examples include “your are coming,” “My years … have help,” “qualifications that have increase,” and “I have develop,” where verb forms do not agree with the tense or subject. The long sentence about cuisine also needs clearer punctuation and a more accurate connector. Review present perfect forms (“have helped,” “have increased,” “have developed”) and check subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries when editing.
