Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Rishitha,
I hope you're doing well. I was delighted to hear from Aravind about your future plan studying aboard to complete your university course. It's a really good idea to ask for my advise for this matter, as you know, I've also did the same.
Initially, I was thinking to purse my master's degree in a university situated in United states. Unfortunately, my financial institute didn't provided me with enough funds to enroll in it. However, I had an opportunity to study in university of Windsor, located in Canada, and I've successfully gained my master's degree in mechanical engineering.
Canada is a good country with a diverse communities. What I have learnt during my stay is that Canadians are the most friendly and generous people compare to the people living in United states. Moreover, the country has a severe winters than any other countries, it feels like antartica, So make sure to bring some better winter jackets.
The course which I pursed helped me to gain deeper knowledge on machines. Furthermore, it was really helpful for me to have that additional opportunity in this country to work in one for the greatest company which manufactures automobile parts.
I wish you all the best and I hope that my advise help you in achieveing your goals.
Kind regards,
Anand

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a suitable, friendly tone for writing to a friend’s sister. You clearly identify the University of Windsor in Canada, describe your impressions of Canadians and the winter climate, and explain that your course deepened your knowledge of machines and led to useful work experience. These details make the account relevant and generally well supported. The explanation of how the year abroad helped your studies is strongest when you mention gaining deeper knowledge and working for an automobile-parts company; it could be developed further by showing how that experience connected to your university learning or future goals. Overall, the task is fully addressed, though some observations about the country are broad generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the reason for writing, explain where you studied, describe Canada, and then discuss academic and work benefits before closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between ideas. The opening and closing also suit the letter format. At times, the connections feel slightly mechanical, and the long sentence beginning “What I have learnt during my stay” joins contrasting observations with a comma, making the relationship less clear. You could improve flow by using shorter, more focused sentences and linking the country description directly to your personal experience. Overall, the organisation is clear and the reader can follow the account throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “diverse communities,” “deeper knowledge,” “financial institute,” and “manufactures automobile parts.” These choices allow you to explain your study plans and experience, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling errors that limit precision: “financial institute” would usually be “financial institution,” “purse” should be “pursue,” and “advise” is used where the noun “advice” is needed. “Severe winters” is understandable, but “harsh winters” is more natural. Greater care with spelling and common word partnerships would make your vocabulary more accurate and fluent while preserving the useful range you already show.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, using clauses with “as,” “which,” and “that,” as well as contrastive structures. This gives the letter some variety, and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors recur, however, particularly in verb forms, agreement, articles, and comparisons. For example, “I've also did” should be “I've also done,” “didn't provided” should be “didn't provide,” and “a diverse communities” has an article–plural mismatch. In “the most friendly and generous people compare to,” the comparison structure is incomplete; use “compared with.” Sentence boundaries also need attention in the long sentence about Canadians and winter. Review these patterns to make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
