Dear........,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Anu,
I am writing this letter in response of your letter in which you asked me about my experience regarding spending a year studying abroad.
I studied in master of technology and science in a University of London. They have two branches in Canada, one of the branch is close to Toronto which is great location. However, I chose other one as I have my friend who chose the same course.
Since I moved here, I learnt lot of new things but learning new langauge is a challenging part. As you have to communicate with people and without conversation it is very difficult to live here. Also, I learnt about their culture and history which is intersting.
As I studied here, it helped me a lot with getting job offers. I got job offers from many companies with good salary which is why I can achieve my goals and it help me for career growth. Additionally, this study help me with understanding the ethics of Canada as it is more depending on it.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Jinal Prajapati.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you say you studied at a university in London, mention learning about language, culture and history, and explain that the experience supported your career goals. The letter is relevant and its purpose is clear. However, some details are unclear or only briefly developed. For example, “They have two branches in Canada” conflicts with the stated location in London, so the reader cannot tell where you actually studied. The description of what you learnt is also general, and the link between studying abroad and your university studies is less clear than the link to job offers. Give a consistent location and add a specific example of how the experience helped your academic work.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, separate paragraphs about the location, learning and benefits, and a suitable closing. Connectors such as “Since,” “Also” and “Additionally” help show how ideas relate, and the reader can follow the main message. To make the progression more effective, clarify the relationship between London and the two Canadian branches; this inconsistency interrupts the account. Some links are also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “As” to begin explanations. Use more precise transitions and ensure each paragraph develops one clear point—for instance, distinguish what you learnt about Canada from how that learning supported your course.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “culture,” “history,” “job offers” and “career growth.” There are also attempts to express more specific concepts, such as “ethics of Canada,” although that phrase is unclear in context. The range is somewhat limited, and several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce naturalness: “in response of,” “great location,” “good salary” and “intersting.” Choose more precise expressions and check spelling. For example, explain what aspect of Canadian society you mean by “ethics,” and use vocabulary that directly describes academic benefits rather than relying mainly on employment outcomes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and longer structures, including the conditional idea “As you have to communicate with people…” and the relative clause “which is why I can achieve my goals.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence patterns, verb forms and agreement. Examples include “I studied in master of technology and science in a University,” “one of the branch,” and “it help me for career growth.” The sentence beginning “As I studied here” also does not clearly express the intended relationship between the study and its benefits. Review articles, plural forms and subject–verb agreement, and make sure longer sentences have a clear main clause.
