Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the competitive era, family members prefer to work together in a family businesses. This substantial trend has sparked the controversy over the recent years. Working together may improve family bonding and business growth; however, the negative consequences are mass failure and less independence.

On the one hand, there are several advantages in working with a family. One of the significant factors is business advancement. If many family members will work in a business; they will expand business in various ways. In other words, together they may focus in reducing unnecessary expenses, promote products, improve relations with customers and attract more deals. Thus, this not only enhances the growth but also decreases expenses. Another advantage is family bonding. A family will spend more time together in office. As a result, they better understand each other's thoughts and working process. Thus, this improves their interpersonal relations.

On the other hand, there are compelling disadvantages. Firstly, a mass failure. In a family business, if a member does any mistakes; a whole family has to face consequences. For example, In any business, if accountant make frequent mistakes and do not track profits and loses appropriately, then there are high chances of a business failure. A business cannot run over loses; as a result, everyone lose employment. Secondly, less independence. In family business, everyone asked permission before taking any decisions. It is a preventive mechanism to prevent any mistakes. Hence, members feel less important and less independent.

To conclude, although there are few disadvantages of family members working together, I believe the chances of business growth and improvement of family bonding is far higher.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the question and state a clear position: the benefits of business growth and stronger family relationships outweigh the drawbacks. The two advantages and two disadvantages are relevant, and the accountant example helps illustrate how one person’s errors can affect the whole family. This meets the task well, while some ideas remain less fully developed than others. For instance, the claim that family members can attract more deals is listed but not explained with a specific mechanism or example. The point about reduced independence is also brief, and the conclusion largely repeats your position. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of each point more fully and support at least one advantage with a concrete example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” makes the direction of the argument easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, linking can feel mechanical because “Thus” and “As a result” recur, and some connections are not fully clear. For example, the accountant’s mistakes are linked to everyone losing employment, but the steps between poor record-keeping and business failure could be made more explicit. The opening also presents the main points in a compressed list. Use a wider range of natural transitions and develop the relationship between each claim, explanation, and example to make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “business advancement,” “unnecessary expenses,” “interpersonal relations,” and “independence,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There is also an attempt to use more formal language, such as “compelling disadvantages.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “mass failure” does not clearly express the intended risk, “focus in reducing” is awkward, and “run over loses” obscures the meaning. There are also spelling or form errors such as “loses” for “losses.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than choosing formal-sounding phrases. Building a bank of business collocations and checking word forms will help you express these ideas more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures and cause-and-effect clauses, and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “A family will spend more time together in office.” However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “If many family members will work” should use a present form after “if,” while “if accountant make” needs an article and subject–verb agreement. “Everyone asked permission” is missing an auxiliary, and “everyone lose employment” has an agreement error. Punctuation around clauses is also sometimes misplaced, as in “mistakes; a whole family.” Review conditional forms, singular/plural agreement, and complete verb phrases, then proofread each sentence for these patterns.
