In many countries, family members work together in their family business.
Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In most of countries, family members are working together to enhance their family business and they want to build their business for next generations. I think having family business have more merits instead of demerits.
The primary reason why i hold this view is that, mostly families work hard and they want to set their children's carrier and save money for their future. For example, in India, mostly parents give all the responsibilty to their children after the age of 40s because they know their children can grow their business. As a result, if all members working together they do not have any doubts.
Another important factor to consider is that, if family shares their thoughts with each other, they can build their business more with different ideas. Moreover, they can consider where problem is and find solution together. Also, they can share their skills in economic growth of business.
However, working together can also create a issues with each others. Sometimes, other family member have different point of thinking but they do not like, there will be the problem and can be more conflicts with them. Furthermore, some family member do not like to enter in their family business, because they do not have much interest what their family doing. For instance, in this modern era, children are more intelligent and they have different mind and skills, they want to run own business with latest techniques. Consequently, every family member want to work with own way that is why they are less likely to run their family business.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that everyone have different ideas and they want to earn money with own skills. I think having family business can more helpful than build the new one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You answer the question directly and maintain a clear view that family businesses have more advantages, supported by reasons about shared effort, passing responsibility to children, and exchanging ideas. You also acknowledge disadvantages, including disagreements and younger relatives preferring independent ventures, so both sides of the question are addressed. The India example gives some support, but the claim about parents transferring responsibility after their children reach their forties is not fully explained, and the benefits of trust and shared skills remain quite general. To strengthen the response, develop one or two points with a clearer explanation of how they affect a business, and make the final comparison between advantages and disadvantages more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs presenting advantages, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “The primary reason,” “Another important factor,” and “However” helps readers follow the argument. However, some links are mechanical, and connections between claims are occasionally unclear. For example, “As a result, if all members working together they do not have any doubts” does not clearly explain how the example leads to this conclusion. The final paragraph also introduces the idea that people want to earn money using their own skills without clearly reconciling it with the stated preference for family businesses. Use more precise references and explain the relationship between each example and its point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for discussing family businesses, including “responsibility,” “conflicts,” “skills,” and “latest techniques.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and you attempt some topic-specific phrasing. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “set their children's carrier” appears to mean support their children’s careers, while “different point of thinking” and “build their business more with different ideas” are unnatural. There are also spelling errors such as “responsibilty” and “each others.” Aim to learn common business-related collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would help you express the contrast between shared family work and individual ambitions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using clauses with “because,” “if,” and “that,” as well as contrastive structures. This gives the response some variety, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur in several places. For example, “having family business have more merits” has an agreement problem, and “if all members working together” needs a finite verb. In “there will be the problem,” the article and number are not well controlled. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb, then review singular and plural agreement. Greater accuracy in these patterns would make your complex ideas easier to follow.
