Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is observed that some people like work with their family members in their family business in most nations. While this trend has some advantages, I believe that disadvantages can outweigh them.

There are two main advantages of working in family business. The first benefit is related to flexible work schedule. This is because, people do not need to follow the strict timetable. They can fix it accordingly. If they have any issues, they can easily discuss without being hesitate. As a result, they do their job without any stress which helps them to stay focus. Another benefit is saving money. To explain this, people do not need to spend money sperately in build up their own business. They can spend it on making that business better.

However, working in family business has more disadvantages. The first drawback is that it can ruin the relationships. To elaborate on this, every person has different working style and when they work together, it is normal to have arguments. However, sometimes, these things become big issues which have a negative impact on their relationships. Secondly, sometimes, people take things for granted in family business and do not follow the rules and regulations which can impact their business. Lastly, emplyoees have to stay more professional so that their employers will not feel that they are more lenient towards their family members as this thing can produce negatives in their minds. Therefore, running family business is very sensitive which requires more attention. People have to stay more professional so that their relationships will not be impacted.

In conclusion, although working in family business gives flexibilty and stress free work environment, this trend has more disadvantages which cannot be neglected.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you acknowledge benefits but argue that the disadvantages outweigh them, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both sides with relevant points, including flexible schedules and shared start-up costs, followed by relationship conflicts, weak rule-following, and concerns about perceived favouritism. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, the saving-money benefit is explained briefly, while the point about employees needing to appear professional is difficult to follow because the roles of employees and employers are not clearly distinguished. Add a specific example and explain the consequences of each main point more fully to make your argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “The first benefit,” “However,” and “Lastly” help readers follow the argument, and the main position remains consistent. This already gives the essay a coherent progression. To make the links more flexible and precise, reduce the reliance on formulaic listing and clarify references between ideas. For instance, “this thing” in the discussion of employers’ attitudes is vague, and the final two sentences of the disadvantages paragraph repeat the need to be professional and protect relationships. Connect each explanation directly to its point and avoid repeating the same implication.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “flexible work schedule,” “rules and regulations,” and “negative impact on their relationships.” There are also attempts to express more specific concepts, such as “lenient” and “professional.” However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems make the language less natural and sometimes less precise. Examples include “work in family business,” “spend it on making that business better,” and “produce negatives in their minds”; the intended meanings are understandable but the phrasing is awkward. Spelling errors such as “sperately,” “emplyoees,” and “flexibilty” also affect accuracy. Build a wider set of natural business-related collocations and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including conditional clauses (“If they have any issues…”) and cause-and-effect structures (“which helps them…”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “some people like work” needs a gerund or infinitive construction, and “without being hesitate” has an incorrect form after “being.” In “people do not need to spend money … in build up,” the verb pattern is also faulty. There are article and sentence-boundary issues in phrases such as “in family business” and “This is because, people…”. Practise verb patterns, articles, and punctuation around introductory clauses, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
