IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people believe that technology has made man more social. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

A few number of individuals think that development in sophisticated modern technology made individuals more closer to each other socially. This phenomenon has both viewpoints but I am strongly agree with the former statement.

On the one hand, In this modern era, people have busy schedules. To explain it more, they do not have enough time to meet their near and dear ones on regular basis. Due to the use of Mobile phones, laptops and face call , they can easily talk with them everyday. In addition to it, it is helpful for some business where some employees do work from home. To explicit, they can easily arrange meeting online by Skype, Zoom and other platforms. It not only saves the business expenses but also allows employees to spend some quality time with their kith and kins with work. Finally, with the help of social media people feel less isolated because they can easily make friends over social media apps such as Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and Telegram. Daily chat on these apps helps to reduce stress and anxiety in people more than staying alone at home all the time. For example, My family is in India and they never feel like we are in abroad because we talk with each other everyday via wtsapp.

On the other hand, there are multifarious benefits of technology but we cannot deny some disadvantages of it. It makes the lifestyle of individuals more sedentary than past times. To explain it further, sometimes they just scroll over social media apps and they do not aware about the timing spent on them. It also put bad impact on mental and health well being. Due to less physical activity, people face issues more now such as depression and obesity. Moreover, these days, children are more addicted to technology. They always play games on phone and watch television rather than playing any outdoor games or sports.

In conclusion, technology bring lots of benefits for people on the earth to make their lives easier and better but few demerits such as putting adverse effects on health and blooming buds.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments regarding the social benefits of technology and acknowledged counter-arguments. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the benefits are well-supported with examples like Skype and Zoom, the counter-argument section is slightly less focused on the 'social' aspect of the prompt, veering more into general health and lifestyle issues. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point made directly relates back to how technology impacts human social interaction, rather than just general health or productivity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition to it', and 'Moreover'. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and sentence-level flow, such as the phrase 'To explicit', which is not a standard cohesive transition. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words will help the flow of your writing feel more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'sophisticated', 'isolated', 'sedentary', and 'multifarious'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'made individuals more closer' (should be 'closer'), 'face call' (should be 'video calls'), and 'blooming buds' (an unnatural way to refer to children). These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise'. Focusing on common collocations will significantly improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'A few number of individuals' (should be 'A small number of individuals'), 'I am strongly agree' (should be 'I strongly agree'), and 'they do not aware' (should be 'they are not aware'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent. While these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. You should focus on proofreading for basic verb forms and prepositional usage.
