In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Most of the family members are working together to run their family businesses. I strongly agree that family businesses are more advantageous and this essay will discuss how these benefits out way their drawbacks.

To begin with, there are an array of advantages connected with the family firm, but the most significant one is saving money. When young adults join their own business, they can save money by not hiring in - experienced or new person. As if they hire any new graduate, they have to invest on their training and teach them the goals of the organization. As a result, hiring of experienced members of the family not only save their finances, but also save their time. Furthermore, the family businesses lead to quick decision making. When whole family is working towards the same goal, it is feasible to take decisions in favour of the firm rather than employees. Hence, the owners can focus specifically on the cons of the business.

Although, family led businesses are beneficial, lack of personal time is the significant problem. In order to keep running the businesses for long time, the young adults have to put more efforts and they cannot enjoy any day off because they have to stay available anytime . Consequently, it decreases their personal time and efficiency by the time.

In conclusion, although the privately held company demands more efforts, the benefits like saving money as well as quick decision making are more effective. So, the advantages of running family led businesses can never be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas regarding cost-saving and decision-making are relevant, though the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument about 'saving money' by not hiring new graduates is a valid point, but it could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The counter-argument regarding personal time is also relevant but remains brief. Overall, the response is well-focused, but the depth of explanation for the supporting points is slightly underdeveloped, which is characteristic of a Band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the use of 'the' before 'family businesses' in some contexts where it is not required. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'feasible' and 'privately held company'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'hiring in - experienced' (should be 'inexperienced') and 'out way' (should be 'outweigh'). The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but the lack of precision and occasional errors in word formation prevent a higher score. The vocabulary is functional but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'Most of the family members are working' (should be 'Most family members work'), 'hiring of experienced members' (should be 'hiring experienced members'), and 'the whole family is' (should be 'the whole family'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor issues with spacing and article usage. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. A greater variety of error-free complex structures is needed.
