Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's world, many people are blessed with the family business and households who have their own business finds it very valuable asset as it adds notable value in their life personally and financially. In my opinion, this trend has more merits than demerits. This essay will support my opinion with relevant examples.

To begin with, family business provides career opportunity to the family members at very start of their career, which enables faster learning for them than a person who works for someone else because learning opportunities at job depends on business needs rather then personal interest. Moreover, when family members work together it helps families to strengthen their family bonding. Having said that, it also streamline the decision making within company and avoid delays and losses due to mismanagement. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses all parts of the task, providing a clear position that family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages. The ideas are relevant and supported by personal examples, such as the mention of your father's business and your friend's company. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven; while the advantages are explained, the discussion on disadvantages could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The conclusion introduces a new point about 'uplifting the life of others' which was not previously discussed in the body paragraphs, making it slightly disconnected from the earlier arguments. Overall, the response is well-focused and maintains a consistent position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the advantages and disadvantages. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly abrupt shift in the final paragraph. The use of pronouns and linking words is generally effective, but the logical progression could be smoother in the transition between the second and third paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'assets', 'mismanagement', 'turn-over', and 'productivity'. There are some noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'essay' instead of 'easy', 'dace' instead of 'faced', and 'declination' instead of 'decline'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and ensure that less common vocabulary is used accurately. The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('households... finds', 'family members works', 'one of my friend') and article usage ('the family business', 'a only decision maker'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that affect the flow. While you attempt complex sentences, they are often marred by these persistent errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and article placement, as these frequent slips prevent the essay from reaching a higher band despite the attempt at varied sentence structures.
