Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is one controversial argument going on that most family businesses are run by their own familiy members. I believe that this tradition of running business provide significant benefits to the development. This essay will highlight some possible merits and will bestow relevant examples.

To begin with, there are multiple factors contributing to this phenomenon. The primary advantage of family members taking part in their business is that they tend to have better understandings and build unity amoung each other. If there is any situation which is not able to handled by a single memeber, then rest of the members will provide assistance and try to conquer the issue with unity. For example, I own a family business, despite of many precautions, the business somehow turns its way to some adverse circumstances. It is my siblings who come to fix the situation with full of understanding and a sense of unity in them.

Another advantage of family members working together is that they experience a wide range of success. If unity and understanding continues throughout the business establishment, then the entire family is more prone to experience a large amount of revenue each year, since everyone in the family is on the same boat; there is no one to lack behind and feel insecure. This specific reason helps the family to be motivated and mindfull of what they tend to do. For instance, my family get a large amount of profitable income each year which genuinely assist us to lead the business and take a wise decision, thus family members working in the family businesses are on a huge path to success.

In conclusion, families working together in a business is extreamly beneficial due to the fact that they receive alot of benefits like good understanding and unity with each other. Apart from that families also gain lucrative opportunities together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages of family businesses, taking a clear position in support of them. Ideas are extended with personal examples, such as the writer's own family business helping them through adverse circumstances. However, the essay focuses almost exclusively on advantages and fails to address the counter-perspective or disadvantages explicitly mentioned in the prompt ('Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?'). To reach a higher band, the essay needs to briefly acknowledge potential disadvantages, such as interpersonal conflicts or a lack of objective management, before weighing them against the benefits. Despite this omission in balancing the argument, the main ideas presented are relevant and supported, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is coherent overall with a clear structure consisting of an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as 'To begin with,' 'Another advantage,' and 'In conclusion.' However, some referencing is slightly unclear, and mechanical links are occasionally used, such as 'If there is any situation which is not able to handled by a single memeber, then rest of the members will provide assistance.' Furthermore, the conclusion is rather brief and does not add any new synthesis beyond restating the main points. Logical progression is maintained throughout, satisfying the criteria for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'adverse circumstances,' 'lucrative opportunities,' and 'contributing to this phenomenon.' However, there are notable spelling errors ('familiy' instead of family, 'amoung' among, 'memeber' member, 'mindfull' mindful, 'extreamly' extremely, 'alot' a lot) and awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'turns its way to some adverse circumstances' and 'experience a wide range of success.' These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not impede overall communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 6.0 an accurate reflection of the lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'If there is any situation which is not able to handled by a single memeber...' There are, however, frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding passive voice construction ('is not able to handled' instead of 'cannot be handled'), article omission ('familiy business'), and preposition use ('despite of'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though commas are occasionally misplaced. While these errors are noticeable and require the reader to occasionally re-read parts of sentences, they do not severely impede communication, placing the grammatical performance firmly within Band 5.5.
