Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, taking a clear position in the introduction that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are introduced, such as time flexibility, relationship-building, and self-independence, alongside a consideration of the drawbacks regarding social life. However, some arguments lack full extension and rely on somewhat repetitive or generalized examples. For instance, the example about large company owners making decisions feels slightly disconnected from the core theme of working within a family business. Overall, the task is adequately addressed, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors where all parts are addressed, although some ideas remain under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'In other means' instead of 'In other words', and the linking phrase 'so they can upsurge' is imprecise. Paragraphing is clear, but logical progression between sentences within the body paragraphs occasionally falters due to grammatical slips. This reflects Band 6 characteristics, where the essay is coherent overall, but cohesion can be faulty or mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as 'self-independent', 'dominat merits', and 'upsurge'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, including 'spend time' instead of 'spending time', 'dominat' for 'dominant', 'comminication' for 'communication', and 'advantavages' for 'advantages'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response, and communication is not impeded. These features fit the Band 6 descriptor, which notes an adequate range with some inaccuracy in word choice and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising structures such as conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and verb-form inconsistencies like 'believe that spend time', 'persons can be able to', and 'which affects on their social life' (where 'affect' is incorrectly followed by 'on'). Punctuation also shows occasional slips, such as spacing around hyphens ('time - flexibility'). Because these errors are noticeable but rarely impede communication, the response sits comfortably within Band 5.5 to 6.0, aligning best with Band 6 where a mix of structures is used alongside errors that do not block overall comprehension.
