Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, it is very common in many nations where family members to work together in family business. Although, doing family business together has many time disagreements between realtives, I still believe that family businessess have more merits than its demerits.

One of the main advantage of doing family-owned business is build trust and strenghthen relationship among family members. Since they know each other well, they can communicate and make decisions more effectively. For instance, in a family-owned textile business, parents and childrens share responsibilties and can work together. However, a minor disadvantage is that sometimes family members and relatives may have conflits among them during crucial discussions. Nevertheless, this issue can be overcomed by dividing responsibilities and tasks among family members and giving equal chance to present their point of view during business deals. Therefore, the advantages of communication and trust can outweigh this drawback.

Another advantage is that family members can make quick decision in important meetings. when whole family is invloved in family enterprise, it can automatically reduce labour costs. As a result, the business can save money and used it for expansion at international or national level business. However, many family members feel pressured to work in the business even if they are interested in other careers. Nonetheless, this drawback can be minimised by allowing family members to choose career according to their interest and participate in the family business only if they are geniously happy.

Overall, although running a family business can sometimes brimg conflicts and disagreements among family members and relatives, I still believe that its advantages, such as building trust and reducing labour costs, outweigh these drawbacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both advantages and disadvantages of family businesses and clearly stating a position that advantages outweigh disadvantages. The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations and examples, such as mentioning a textile business and referencing labour cost savings and decision-making. However, some arguments tend to generalise or remain slightly under-developed, placing this response at Band 6.5. The position is clear throughout, and the prompt's requirements are fully met in terms of content.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs on advantages/disadvantages, and the conclusion logically. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'One of the main advantage', 'However', and 'Nevertheless' are used to connect ideas, though referencing and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive ('Another advantage is'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, supporting a solid Band 6.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations and phrases such as 'family-owned business', 'reduce labour costs', and 'expansion at international or national level'. However, there are noticeable word form and spelling errors throughout, such as 'time disagreements' instead of 'frequent disagreements', 'realtives', 'strenghthen', 'conflits', 'overcomed', and 'geniously' (genuinely). These inaccuracies show a Band 6.0 level of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising subordinating clauses with 'although', 'since', and 'if'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'it is very common in many nations where family members to work together', 'One of the main advantage' (agreement error), and 'can be overcomed' (passive voice error). Punctuation and article usage also exhibit minor flaws. These non-impeding errors are characteristic of Band 6.0.
